Steam Powered Computer? ... Steam Powered Computer!!

I don't think you could get any more awesome than that!

A UK campaign to build a truck-sized, prototype computer first envisaged in 1837 is gathering steam.

More than 1,600 people have pledged money and support to build Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine.

Although elements of the engine have been built over the last 173 years, a complete working model of the steam-powered machine has never been made.

The campaign hopes to gather donations from 50,000 supporters to kick-start the project.

Contact Katsuhiro OOTOMO because he desperately needs something worse than Steamboy to reinvigorate his career.

The coal burning required to run this thing by steam would exceed the carbon emission allowance of the UK, so it would still be impossible to run it in this age. XD

It's so good to see folks not wasting money on useless, albeit cool, devices. ^_^

So... We've solved the European debt crisis then? Or, is this going to be used as some giant adder to help them balance their books.

I thought it was cool :(

1) Steam tech is a live and well in the UK (as it should be!);

(Please excuse using the Daily Mail).

2) The Babbage project is largely privately funded.

3) The UK Government is dealing with the deficit issues by means of prudent managing of taxes and expenditure.

... ok perhaps on this point we could take some pointers for how the US is dealing with their debt ... should we have some tax cuts for the rich ... not reduce defence spending?

Mine was a serious response...
