CPS-2 Suicide battery lifespan.

Hello all.

Before anyone screams at me, let me explain:

I've heard that CPS-2 batteries last for 5 years.
However, when the board is powered up, the battery isn't used.
Assuming that a board is in regular use, the battery may have very little use compared to a board that isn't used.
I'm wondering if regular use of the board is factored into the battery life estimates.

My question is this:
To give an extreme example - If I was to change a suicide battery with a 1000mAh 3.6v lithium and then not play on the board at all, would the battery still last for at least 5 years?

Has anyone had a board die is less time?

Has anyone changed a battery that was still working after a longer period than 5 years?

A lot of those boards are running after 10 years with the original batteries - good time to replace

I had some 10year old cps2 boards too, still sealed & working.
They might have been running 24/7 in HongKong Arcades though.
It seems like cps3 batteries die faster than the cps2 ones.
A fresh maxell lithium bat should last 5 years even if the board is rarely used.

So it's pretty much like the old SNES/Megadrive carts that used SRAM?

The manufacturers said that the batteries would last for 5 years, in reality they'll last for twice that.

Different batteries, though.

MVS batteries are Nicads.
CPS-2 batteries are non-rechargeable lithium.

I've got a still sealed D&D:TOD US board that's still going (although I am about to change the battery just in case...).

Not all mvs batteries are ni-cad, it depeds on the vintage. MKL posted a usefull thread on the topic recently.

I sometimes use Ni-MH instead.

They are all rechargeable though.

None of the CPS-2 batteries are rechargeable.
