Alright, after Bibliophile's thread, I wanted in on the action too, so here's a new test for you. All of these were released in the US, and it's not limited to console games only. I tried not to pick any that are going to be impossible, so give it your best shot!

Simply post your guesses about what game each song is from. If you're the first to guess it right, you'll claim the points for that song. Obviously the person with the most points wins! For the winner, I have a selection of DVDs you can choose from as a prize (or, if you don't like any of them, you can just have the honor of winning):

zelda_takeone.png

The Princess Bride
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Swimming Pool
Arrested Development - Season 3
Red Shadow
Army of Darkness
Sister Street Fighter
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

So, let's get to it!

-------

Level 1 (1 point each): Easy stuff

01. "Transformed" from Altered Beast (Genesis, 1989) [galfordo]
02. "Cecil's Town (Ebon Keep)" from The Secret of Evermore (SNES, 1995)
03. "Deadwood Ride" from Cruis'n USA (Arcade, 1994)
04. "Aerial Stage" from Mega Man 4 (NES, 1992) [ki atsushi]
05. "The Lobby - 1900s" from Day of the Tentacle (PC, 1993) [twalden]

Level 2 (2 points each): You've probably played these, but do you remember?

06. "Violent Emotion" from The Last Blade 2 (Neo Geo CD, 1999)
07. "The Town" from Harvest Moon 64 (N64, 1999)
08. Theme from Moon Patrol (Arcade, 1982) [not sonic]
09. "Patrol Knob" from Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast, 2000) [Mercenary X99]
10. "Dead Sea ~ Tower of Extinction" from Chrono Cross (PlayStation, 2000) [ki atsushi]

Level 3 (3 points each): Slightly more obscure tunes, but not impossible

11. "Warlord Battle" from Destiny of an Emperor (NES, 1989) [ki atsushi]
12. "Elevator Music 1" from Jurassic Park (SNES, 1994) [Kiselgof]
13. "Multi-Player Battle" from Bomberman 64 (N64, 1997)
14. "Conspiring (Night Theme)" from Way of the Samurai (PS2, 2002)
15. "Stage 3 BGM" from The Castlevania Adventure (Game Boy, 1989) [ki atsushi]

Level 4 (4 points each): Let's see what you're really made of...

16. "Field Battle 2" from Lords of the Realm II (PC, 1996)
17. "Heading Out" from Kwirk (Game Boy, 1990)
18. "BGM 2" from Spy Hunter (PS2, 2001)
19. "Blunderbuss" from Plok (SNES, 1993)
20. "The Guardian" from Return to Zork (PC, 1993)

Level 5 (15 points): SUPER INSANITY CHALLENGE

This song is a combination of 2 instrument tracks from two separate games. Other than being mixed together, they are unedited. Can you identify them both? The melody track is from one game, and the percussion track is from another. HINT: The percussion track has a very distinctive sound that was a common characteristic of the developer.

21. This song is a mixture of the secondary melody track from the Theme from Lolo 2 (NES). If you take out the primary track, it sounds like this. And finally, it is mixed with the drum track (minus hi-hat) from the Underground Cavern stage in Batman: The Video Game (NES).

-------

9 points - ki_atsushi (WINNER)
3 points - Kiselgof
2 points - Mercenary X99
2 points - not sonic
1 point - galfordo
1 point - twalden

Geez, none of these are easy. So I will just take a guess at #17. Is it Circus Charlie?

Nope!

Actually, #17 is probably the most obscure of the entire list (although not quite as obscure as Circus Charlie, I don't think!). That, and maybe #20.

Keep trying, I know you've played a lot of these games.

One of your guesses is close...

Most of these games achieved at least a moderate degree of popularity, or are from franchises that were popular at one point.

#7 Super Mario Bros. 3

#9: Sounds like JET SET RADIO (one of the tracks, BGM scratching and stuff)

#10: Don't know it, but I swear it's a Super Fami Square RPG.

#15: Swear it's AKUMAJO DENSETSU Famicom (JPN Castlevania III)

#21 It's definately an "in house" Konami type sound from the late 80s possibly early 90s. I swear I hear a bit of the NES version of Green Beret (Rush 'N Attack) or even possibly JACKAL. I might just be tired though.

Got one! And one of your other guesses is incredibly close... but there are no JP-only games in the entire list.

And for #21, you're on the right track to figuring it out. Both the melody and percussion are from NES games, and there's only about three companies that produced games with percussion tracks that sound like that. This company is probably the least famous of the three, but that doesn't mean the game in question isn't well-known.

Glad to see my "Gum" & JSR skills have yet to fail me.

As for #21, you're telling me IT'S NOT Konami, and if it's an ULTRA game dammit that is Konami not a separate company, even though it was filed as one. I swear it's the work of Konami. Damn near thought it was the backbeat percussion to "Snake's Revenge" at first but then started thinking JACKAL. Guess I guessed those wrong.

:D No, I didn't count Ultra, since they're the same as Konami. But... Konami is one of the three that made NES games with percussion tracks like that.

As for everyone else, good guesses so far, but no new positive IDs yet.

Man, this just reminds me how few games I've really played.

#12 is SNES Jurassic Park though, elevator music :) That was always a nice welcome chilling sound to get away from the Raptor howling.
Sincerely,

Mikhail

#15 = Simon's Quest. Dude I though this earlier, but some of these tracks aren't the exact NES ones.

Nah, I already guessed that one.

Could it be Belmont's Revenge or some other GB version of Castlevania, Zenimus?

It's not Belmont's Revenge.... that's about all I can say without giving it away.

#15 - Castlevania Adventure

Damn, this one was harder than I thought.

Now you've got it!

It's the music from stage 3. That game was so difficult that not too many people made it that far. That particular stage was notorious for the spiked wall that continuously followed you, forcing you to stay on the move.

To this day, I've still never beaten that game.

6 sounds like PoR or DoS. I forgot which exactly. A room with ghosts dancing, a huge room actually.

21 sounds like something from technos.

13 sounds like a shooter or something from a wipeout game
