As long as it works I guess.
You can get it stranded too.

Billy can you regulate your iron's heat? seems too hot, your solder is not shiny and bulky, also the tip makes a big difference!
also you can clean the flux mess is easier to work on a clean surface!

even the crappy pump from the source works if you know how to use it!

but learning how to do stuff is like the matrix "no one can be told what the matrix is"

That manual desoldering pump will wear you down for long jobs. This is the desoldering tool I use

It has a 15w/30w switch. I've tried the 15w but it seems to take forever to melt the solder.

I think I'm gonna put a blob of hot glue across the wires to try and hold it down.

Post a picture of your soldering iron. Are you using a soldering sponge for cleaning the tip?

And I might suggest you either need a pair of tweezers/forceps, or glasses :P

The 40 watt iron is perfect, just be sure not to leave the iron setting on components too long.

I tend to agree, however i havent seen that brand before, where is it made? It looks to be very nearly the same as the GOOT GS 100 solder sucker, which is made in Japan.

In the USA; Edsyn is the company that invented the first solder sucker. The founder built the first proto type in his garage in the 1960s, the "Soldapullt"

I like your setup Bill! mine is usually a pingpong table. :D
i dont de-solder often but i've had my radioshack de-soldering iron for over ten years now. imo it works great for old through-hole stuff! just did an audio capkit and a monitor flyback+capkit quick and easy. it allows me to wiggle the component's lead as it sucks the solder so i can easily tell the lead is free from the pad (one handed too). braid is obvisouly cheaper but...depends on the job i guess. my two cents...

good work on the project there!

Hey Bill, are you married? If so, what does your wife think of your soldering station? Mine would kill me if I did that on the washer :)

So does she wear the pants or you wear the pants in her choice of colour?

I have a complete workshop for all of my activities. She does all the laundry and I am sure she wouldn't appreciate me soldering on the washer. I wouldn't like her ironing clothes on one of my workbenches either :)

LOL, once my wife saw the twin stick, she wouldn't have cared if I set the laundry room on fire. She was is happy as I was that it worked, and that my Saturn stick lives to fight another day (came really close to modding it). She's a special lady. She has her own custom-ordered MAS stick with a black case and purple buttons, as well as her own 360 & Live account.
