Ok, so I was switching around games on my 6 slot MVS, and I guess the first game wasn't in the slot all the way or something as the graphics were garbled and the sound was screeching/buzzing.

After turning it off, I smelled something burning & I took the game out of slot 1 and looked at it and there was black plastic melted on the connector pins. I looked at the MVS board, and some of the black plastic around the first slot had melted away and went inside the actual connector pins on the slot ;_;

I had games do that garbled graphics/buzzing sound, but nothing ever happend like this ;_;. Oh well.

So um, what the hell should I do now >.<.
There isn't that much plastic on there, but even If I do clean it out, I don't want to risk melting it further >.<

The game was inserted the right way...it wasn't backwards or anything.

The game was a ancient Fatal Fury 1 game to...

You've successfully scared the shit out of me. Sounds like a short on the board, take a look and make sure everything is wired correctly and that there is no debri in the slot. I don't know what to tell you. We smoked a MVS board before here, but it was with a bootleg cart.... It was wired bad and shorted out the board,

man, open up that FF cart and show us what's inside... I have no clue really what could have done that to your board :(

I opened the game up, and it looks normal, except for maybe the 2 eproms on one board, and 1 eprom on the other...the soldering looks all original and stuff.

I don't see any reason why this couldn't happen with a AES system :p ?

So I took the motherboard out now..

Yep yep yep, All the melting was on one half of one side of the edge connector...all those little plastic things between the pins are melted all over.

So besides the thing needs fixing that caused it, I'll need a new connector, or just stop using that slot... Or maybe it was just that gay cart that caused it. When it was hooked up, the other slots seemed to work like normal.

The top and bottom of the motherboard look like they've always looked...There is this one trace on the bottom middle by a screw that looks like it could be broken or at least damaged...but it has been like that for a long time.

Ok i guess what happened was that since the cart probably wasn't inserted all the way, the voltages started to jump across the connector into the cart pcb. Maybe there was a bit of dust there that caught fire. As the slot melted it got worse, the molten plastic 'fueling' the sparks etc. Could happen to anyone.. :( Probably can happen on AES too if it's dirty enough :)

Hmmm, I clean my carts with qtips so it wasn't dust...but if it was anything like that, it would probably have been a thin strand of cotton from the q-tips I use to clean my games with... I know when I clean games with Q-tips I put it under the light to see if there is any cotton, and there are usally a few really thin strands.

Oh hey, its only been 6 years and I finally got around to taking a pic of the mvs slot.

The other 5slots still working fine to this day :)
Dunno what I did with that game that did this, probably trashed it.

I could scrape the plastic off and use it like that...bad idea though if the connectors touch :)

The other option is take a working slot off of a dead board and fit it or get someone else to fit it :)

That sure is a long ass time to take to post a pic too! :lolz:

If you were willing to clean it , how would you do and using what type of product/tool?
It looks difficult to do properly.

by the way I loooove FF, it's a cool game, smoking hot (sorry...)

I actually did clean it out the other day hehe.
I used tweezers to pick some out, a tiny screwdriver to wedge some more out
a soldering iron to melt some off, and finally at the end I used some fine sandpaper to get any remaining pieces and then blew off the dust and finally used some isopropyl alcohol to clean any left over "dust"

Anyways it works now.

A nice set of dental picks would have helped you greatly with this.

BTW: I have a few spare slots sitting on some unrepairable parts boards in the boneyard here.
