Problems with S-Video

I recently purchased a neogeo aes system (japanese) and got it modded with s-vid and stereo from !arcade!. I received it back and ran down to the local radio shack to pick up stereo/s-video cables and once I hooked everything up to the big screen I noticed that it looked worse in s-video. THe characters were more refined but there were really ugly scan lines that stood vertically across the screen. That and the colors were alot lighter. I'm wondering why it's doing this (i haven't gotten a chance to try it on another tv yet) and could it be because I purchased the s-vid cable from radio shack? (does it make a difference)

help me out please!

A large part of your problem is that you're using a big screen TV. Anything over 27" or so will give you pixellation and such. I believe even the mighty Shawn (the admin here) uses a 27" Sony Wega.

Another question to ask is, which S-Video mod did you go for? The old one, or the new one?

Here's my advice.

1) Switch to a smaller TV
2) buy high quality cables. Monster cables should be easily available to a local circuit city, best buy... Lots of places really. They make a difference.

If those two suggestions don't fix you up, contact Ray Young and talk to him.

Technically if it's your preference, you could always just use the composite connection, I suppose.

I have the same problem. It bothered me at first but I got used to them. I have a Sony 27 inch TV hooked to my Neo. I also got my cables from Radio Shack that are gold plated. I don't think your cables are the problem. If they are, tell me. I think that you should go with a TV my size to get the most out of the unit. If you already are using one my size then you are SOL. I heard Toshiba had a 20 inch TV with S-Video - I bet the mod would look great on it.... :)

Did you get one of the new mods that !Arcade! offers or one of the old ones? The old ones produce different results depending on the revision of the video board on your AES.

Most 2-D games look like pixilated crap on any screen over 25-27 inch (except maybe GGX).

I'd say 25 inch is the perfect size for 2-D.
