the reason:
there is a souped up naomi cabinet running star wars racing.i forgot the japanese name of the board.

naomi 2 is already in development during the US dc launch.the extra horse power could be put into the dc in the first place if sega really think about it.it should be put into the japanese dc way back.sega should have delayed the japanese launch to modify the dc.

naomi is basically a dc with extra memory.those RAM could be put into the dc as well.

All these could have really helped sega if they anaylise it carefully.i have nothing against sega but i'm just stating their mistakes.

Yes, any console could be "souped-up" if they continued to delay it. At some point, they have to deliver final specs to developers, though. Likewise, they have to gear up in advance for production of the units.

A computer from 1980 could have been as good as a Pentium IV if they had waited until the year 2001 to design and build it using the advanced technology available. <IMG SRC="smilies/ohno.gif" border="0">

The SWR board is "Hikaru". This is also the board that powers Planet Harriers and Brave Fire Fighters.

NAOMI 2 doesn't just have more RAM. It's got a T&L Chip "Elan" and uses a dual PowerVR setup. It has a rendering speed of 2,000 Megapixels (if 10x overdraw is used) a second versus the NAOMI's 500 Megapixels.

System16.com is one site that goes into more detail on the NAOMI 1 & 2 specs.

I don't buy this idea. The DC was fine in terms of hardware power, IMHO. The DC died due to poor sales in Japan. The thing died on marketing, hype, etc. The PS2 hasn't demonstrated anything substantial over the DC in terms of capability.

If anything, it didn't die because it wasn't powerful enough, it died because people were TOLD it wasn't powerful enough.

DC has plenty of 2D and 3D horsepower. Most of their games look as good or better than the current PS2 crop of games. The reason DC failed was because Sony had a huge momentum with PS and it carried over to PS2. Sega also had the failure of 32x and Saturn to contend with. Most game players are not meticulous enough to compare the hardware capabilities of a console. They go with instincts and what they think will be successful in the long run.

I wish Sega and Capcom could find a way to continue supporting Dreamcast like a niche market. There are millions of Dreamcast owners and they will continue to buy games if they put out quality products. I know selling the hardware constitutes a loss for them so stop making new Dreamcast and just make new games. They can still make games for other platforms but how hard is it to port the NAOMI arcade titles anyway?

Even if they had souped it up it would not have prevented Segas demise. It may only contributed to segas quicker demise as a console maker.
