- Cyvern The Dragon Weapons
The last shmup developed my Kaneko, Cyvern is a danmaku vertical shmup with a steampunk / bioengineering theme. Choose from three cybernetic dragons and collect medals for a high score. It was released exclusively in the arcade.
- RayStorm
The second game in Taito's vertically scrolling Ray series, RayStorm is a more traditional spaceship shmup with a polished presentation, and gameplay that requires the player to shoot down enemies on the same plane with a main gun, and lock onto oncoming enemies in the background with homing missiles. Released orginally in the arcade with ports to PS1, Saturn, PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows.
- R-Type II
The sequel to Irem's legendary horizontal checkpoint-based shmup, R-Type II is tough as nails, with challenging level design and intimidating bosses. It was ported all over to many platforms, but if it's selected for SotM, we'll be staying faithful to the arcade original, which means the PS1, PSP and PS3 direct ports, or the "Dimensions" port released for the XBox 360, Switch, PS4 and Xbox One.
- Zero Ranger
Released just last year, this newcomer shmup cracked the Top 25 in last year's "Top 25 Shmups of All Time" poll on the Shmups forum. Take on the evil Green Orange alien empire in this vertical shmup that blends gameplay influences from a variety of past games, including Ikaruga and the Ray series. A Windows / Steam exclusive, but inexpensive at $12.
