I trust that most of us who come here are like me, me being a member of 80's protoculture. That's right, we are the mistempered "Kids In America" who spent most of their childhood growing up in arcades and malls all around the world. Most of us can probably still remember where we were when we first laid eyes upon the Neo Geo, the system of ages. For me it was on an episode of GamePro TV, hosted by J D Ron (FunHouse), and Sasha Mitchel (Step By Step). I was hooked, I loved everything about the little black machine, even if I didn't know much about it at the time. But at the time I knew that no matter how much I asked, and pleaded, there was just no way I was going to get one. I was a 10 year old boy then, but now almost 11 years later, and I am a man. No longer am I limited to my father's christmas bonus as means for my better purchase decessions, I have a bank account and a job now. And soon I will be amung the true hardcore gamers in stature, soon I will know the joys & pains of games like Metal Slug 3, and Pulstar without having to plunk in a quarter every time. And with the future prospect of items like Metal Slug 4 and The Crystal System, the future looks brighter than it did back in October 2001, when the doors of SNK closed for good. The death of SNK it was called, but it's not dead, just passed it's tourch to the next generation. Names like BrizzaSoft, Eolith, and Noise Factory, all help to make the future bright for all Neo Freaks, from now to come. So it is through us the fans, that the system lives on, and will stay that way as long theres people like who're willing to open an online retail store, or a software company to keep the next generation in games for the system, and people like me who wish to open an arcade that caters only to Neo Geo (and pin ball), we shall forever go forth.

Growing up in the 80's was some crazy shit!! I'm 28 now and i can totally relate to the whole concept of no longer trying to beg your gaming stuff out of your parents. My wife is completely understanding of my gaming passion. We have a roof over our heads, clothes on our kids backs, and food on the table. I have a pretty good job, so i have a fair amount of "hobby money". I sometimes think i'm acting like a child playing these "games". But hey, i'm a grown man, take care of my family, and i LIKE playing games. It helps me unwind.

Here's to long ago wants and wishes finally coming true!!! :D

You see, it's not as they say, we're not all "21st Centery Digital Boys" who don't know how to live, but we've got alot of toys. Some of us are family men now, with kids of our own. Do you kind sir wish to bring up your kids as future Neo Freaks?

Well i dont want my kids glued to the TV all the time, but i do want them to know the greatness of it, of it all. All the way back(as far as i'm concerned) to the Odyssey2 up through the XboX. Its a great time to be growing up. I wish i could see what the future of gaming will be like when my kids are in their 20s. Right now, i'm the coolest dad they know :D (video game wise ;) )

a lot of people now of days don't care for cool 2D games anymore, opting instead for 3D. I Liquid Snake (the one from the game) put it best when he said "Todays Gnome Solider aren't like us Snake, they're digital." That's sad really, because you get more enjoyment out of more games that are 2D than you can even half the crap that is 3D (I mean how many times do you have to look at Tomb Raider before you figure out that it's a bad game). Although don't get me wrong, 3D can be good, if it's applied right (Metal Gear anyone? Not good enough, how about Grand Theft Auto 3?).
I think some of the chief game software companies should really take a step back to look at the past more, maybe then they'll see what works.

Ah, the future does look bright in some cases. Most prominently with the XBox, with the gaming goodness that makes up Jet Set Raideo Future, and with the promise of a decent Robotech (you see, 2D does make a game better) game.

You know I still long for the days of Guantlet, Choplifter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Joust for the arcade. But I'm left with Tekken 4 (although Soulcalibre kicked ass), and a not as much fun as the original Guantlet.

opps, it is now 4:30 AM where I'm at, and I have a busy day tomorrow. If you wish, you can continue to man the topic if you'd like, if not, then feel free to look for it some other day. I will keep putting up this topic for as long as possible (or at least until I can find a better name for it), so please feel free to come back, and bring friends if you wish. Until then, goodnight.

Oh yeah, I was also kind of disappointed that the world did not end in nuclear holocaust the way we always figured it would, growing up in the 80's. ;)

Can anyone remember the name of that tv show where kids would play games like blaster master and magician lord to be able to run through shelves of video game stuff and grab as much as they could? If they found a certain thing they won a Neogeo. Anyone remember that show? Even better anyone have it recorded :D

Hey Collector. Will you be my pretend dad? my dad doesn't understand anything about my passion for games. He likes to say, and I quote, "Matthew! Turn off that dumb-fucking game!" and, "Get out of those dumbass games, and into something real! Like your homework!" Jesus Christ, it's Hell with him.

My dad was pretty much the same way. When i was in junior high/high school, my NES was got taken "away" more times than i could count. I would stay up late in my room playing Zanac all night and then in the morning i would pause the game and turn just the TV off and goto to school. Come home turn on the TV and keep playing. Once and a while my mom might catch on and turn it off while i was at school, but that was a chance i was willing to take :D . But like i said now its been like 14-15 yrs since then and now i make my own decisions for my own life. I still like to joke around with my dad about how when he would take it "away"... like put it under his bed, i'd just sneak in there after school and hook it up to the TV in their room !
It might be Hell now, but just like me, down the road you'll realize who really was there for you all your life.

:)

Who promised you a perfect life? reflect on the positive and learn to cope with the negative.
The Internet is your door to the world...we did'nt have that in the 80's. the BBS's were good enough though :-D

Ah yes, the BBSes. I grew up in the time before that when then the biggest tech hack things were dial a jokes. I mainly cut my gaming teeth when games made the transition from mechanical novelties to eelctronic things like computer Space and Pong. some of the classics I always was wild about, used to have a Tempest, loved Star Castle, could never play Defender worth a damn. Pinballs were always important to me; I have been through about 8 pinballs botu now I own only a Hyperball and a Haunted House pinball, in addition to a whole slew of videos, ones being a one of a kind called Cybertank.

no family yet. Yet is the operative word for having my own. At 38, its a case of better late than never :)

I'll take your advice BIG BEAR, thanks. BTW, Collector, does your time in the garage involve: drinking, smoking cigars, and moping? I didn't think so.

NeoFreakWolf , I remember seeing that same episode about Neo Geo . They showed how the memory card worked .

Yep I remember pauseing your NES because you got really far and there was no one you could turn it off . I'm surprised there was no reports on the news of an NES over heating catching on fire and buring a house down . I left me NES on a whole weekend one time , from friday to monday .

Actuall, my friends did that once, but it didn't catch fire to the house, only the system. It cost him his brand new copy of The Legend of Zelda too.

Now onto the father/son relationship. I found that the best bonding that my father, my brother and I ever did was not passing a pigskin around, but when we were crunching quarters together, on some of the most recognizible 4 player games to come out in the arcades. And together we beat all of them, while at the same time making our local arcade all that much richer. It was only in this setting that we were ever able to truly get along, without arguement. I know that all fathers care for there sons, but most just don't know the best way to show it.
