Ya hey all,

Not sure if this belongs strictly in the Creative section, but what the hell.

Finally got the video from my first live show posted.

VariableProject's maiden voyage!

This was the first show that I'd ever tried to play live and sing at the same time. I think it went pretty well even if I forgot chunks of the lyrics. Lea ran the sequencers+sampler and I did the live synth+vocals. Tons of fun, if you dig it awesome, if not, no worries I've got tough skin :). Take care all!

Sermon (organ and beats)

Swarm (Orwell's War of the Worlds samples and synths)

HardLine (slow layered and echoy)

Mantra (my favorite, the mantra)

its funny that you're doing it with your lady there.
when i was walking back to my car after the aclf on saturday a few weeks ago
i met these two folks.
and they had a bus and they were unloading a synth.
i was like. hey cool. and the girl was in fishnet stockings so
of course i stopped and started talking to them.
they were doing a show in a parking lot right there
girl on synth and guy with a strange way of playing the guitar.
they were really cool, sort of ambient sort of what your doing.
i felt real bad though because no one walked by.
i was like. hey i'll take a cd and they said cool.
it was like 5 dollars but i only had 20s and they had no change
so they were like, hey cool. just keep it.
not what i get into tremendously, but cool stuff.
anyways:

Gotta disagree with you there. Granted it may SEEM easier, but good techno/electronic is hard to come by. There is so much cookie cutter techno music that is simply just terrible, and so unenjoyable. For good electronic/trance/techno check out artists like Adam Freeland and Ken Ishii, go to a local club to find your shit.

I listened to Mantra and depsite the bad sound quality found it enjoyable. Am I mistaken that you seemed to take a bit of a hip-hop approach to the song? I didn't finish the song so I could be way off.

Thanks RareHero, very cool that you stopped to check out the folks that you saw playing the other day. And your song Toy Guns, cool shit!

zer0hue, opps, mislabeled the track. Yeah, I found the whole broadcast in public archives and started messing around with it. Fun stuff, such a cool sound to the whole broadcast.

not sonic, you should have heard it on the PA. I think I hurt people :).

Thanks for listening. Yeah, it wasn't really intentional, but when I tried to put something behind the words, they definitely picked up a rhythm. "I sing like an amputee, can't hold a note, can't carry a tune", so spoken word'ish stuff comes much easier. The last few recordings that I've been playing around with came out more in the vein of Zach De La Rocha, which actually works really well with hard electronic music I think. Hopefully it'll start to form into something more concrete. Thanks again!

actually i just bid on a cheap casio keyboard on ebay.
synths are an addicting hobby to enthusiasts and musicians both.
and mr kristoff, that's not my music, that's the folks I met in the parking lot.
they were really cool, i'd like to see them for one of their shows in austin
sometime, they told me they do alot of special side stuff like showing
stuff off of an lcd projector while playing music, which can be a fun experience
given the type of music it is.

What gear are you guys using?

For playing live, we used:

Roland JX305, I use it to play synth lines, the piano part, control filters, and to do a little bit of the drums.
Korg Prophecy, this wave slaved to the 305, was used for some of the analog sounds.
Roland 808, used for the voice samples, for running the vocal effects (there's a pedal that I keep stepping on and off), and for juggling the backing tracks.
Behringer 10 Track, small mixer that it all goes through and patches in the vocals through.

Lea would basically juggle the tracks (syncing, fading) and bring them in with mutes. Kind of like a DJ would with songs, but instead with each element of the song. She would also run a few of the live effects that needed to me modulated.

And then I played some of the lead synth lines, tweaked a good chunk of the effects on the fly, and did the vocals.

Each show we do a little more live to see how much we can handle and keep track of at once. Much fun!

At home I've also got a Yamaha RMX1, Korg R1, Kawai K1, and some other odd things.

Looks like we might do a Halloween show, here's hoping. :glee:

Well considering Zach DeLa Rocha is a small god that's quite alright. I'm probably the biggest Rage fan on this board.
