What it all comes down to is you go to a get together and half the people deserve their own reality show (which may happen to be Hoarders), and the other half is okay. Structure is a good thing when you have so many diverse people of varying cultures.

One of the reasons I either keep mine quiet (to members I know) or tell people before they come over that if they start any shit or act like an idiot, I'll throw them out on their ass. Keeps the drama down.. I have no interest in taking stupid message board drama or rivalries personal or into "real life"

Would you take it really personal if I didn't invite you to a get together?

Ha, not at all.

Just let me know I'm not invited so I can act like it affects me.. would probably make good forum fodder for a slow day at work for me.

Some people really let it affect them.

I think most of the SNK fans in the DMV are pretty cool, don't smell bad, and with the exception of SSS can hold their alcohol. Not so sure about the Capcom fans. A lot of them are more hardcore otaku, who have train themselves to focus soley on the scene and not on other social necessities.

I agree with VT 100%

I was stoned when I first read Tonks repost of his meet-up rules and I forgot what thread I was in. My first thought was, damn Tonk is a control freak.

Then I regained clarity and recalled reading Waseem's OP for that meetup and having the same instinctive response.

he also seemed to be obsessed with showering (He even mentions the shower at this work.)

With all that obsession with cleanliness, you'd think he'd be thorough enough to clean up a crime scene...

Yeah... when our Gatherings started to get really huge several years ago with Capcom tourneys we started to get some of the more stereotypical SRK-types. Now there are some nice people from there, but some of the others fit square into that issue. That's why the MN gatherings sort of went quiet for a bit and then re-started on a smaller scale. Much better now.

I have to go with VT on this where most of those rules should be common knowledge. I feel like if you did any of those things at any kind of gathering you would stick out like a sore thumb.

That being said, gamers are notorious for disregarding social norms. I've been to enough Cons/Fighting game tourneys/ gatherings to know that they just don't understand, or care to understand common courtesies like what Waseem mentioned.

If by "gamer" you mean some social retard with flaky skin, a unibrow, an unusually long forehead and a nasally voice who reeks like shit and tries to ash his cigarettes on your leather furniture....I got news for you: I won't be laying down any ground rules before you step on my property because it just won't happen. Shit, you woun't even come close enough to collect my garbage if you're that fucked up.

Nobody should have to tell a person they need to wash up before stepping out. Is water and soap that fucking expensive these days??

TonK told me once of a family member who'd been eating cheese puffs trying to get on the AstroCity without washing his hands.

A local friend and I have some similar rules in place about washing your hands prior to playing any games. Just want to keep things clean and not grime up the control panels or controllers. No shoes, no smoking, and no open beverage containers are also standard rules. I also like the overall cleanliness of similar minded gamers like Dave K. Once you attend a Bay Area Shmupmeet and see how clean and organized everything is, you start judging all other meetups by that standard.

I think people are kidding --the only people who would find a list like that too weird are kernows.

excuuuse me I remember when he was slowly climbing up the ranks of power and I kept calling him murderer eyes - but everyone kept telling me to chill because he was a nice guy.

More proof I'm always right.

I never said it was just the rules that were strange... it was the schedule and the amount of detail. The presentation of it is also a bit odd.

I quit smoking so it bother me a bit more than it does others. Making someone wait outside for 5 minutes? A little strange, don't you think? It's not the NO SMOKING INSIDE rule that's weird... its that extra little bit.

I don't disagree with the rest of what you said, in fact, we agree on everything.

I wouldn't be down with the drug use and a lot of that is a liability/safety issue. I don't care if people do a J in their own home, but doing it in someone else's, un-prompted and around strangers is an issue. I hope no one has done that at my place and I think the nature of those things doesn't lend itself to that behavior (or if it is, it's VERY hidden).

It's been a few days since I checked this thread, but I agree... it's the OCD level of structure that is presented in that post that gives it the creep factor.

Generally, smoke doesn't cling to clothes when you smoke outside anyways. Hopefully showering is a given, as well as the drug use. If someone smells like BO I would just not invite them back.

As for washing your hands, I would hope that people would want to do it for their own hygiene, but I wouldn't get all crazy about people with dirty hands touching the controllers... I would be cleaning them thoroughly with rubbing alcohol after the event regardless. Just mentioning washing your hands in the way he did screams "weird germophobe".

How could be stoned on weed hurt you cab?

Funion crumbs?

Im generally not going to hit the buttons as hard or as fast, nor will I rage on the joystick.

So essentially stoned people are going to put less wear/tear on your cabs than a normal gamer, or one on caffeine.

My concern would be with people leaving and getting in an accident or my kids being exposed to it. They aren't around during gatherings, but I'd rather not take the chance.

You need to stop spewing bullshit, buddy. If it was funny it would be fine, but you're just not good at this internet thing.

Stoners are just fucking annoying more than anything. We've all been there, most grow out of it though. Not saying drinkings any better mind. Most people I've met at meets are normal, you get one or two stinky bastards who are really nerdy and unable to communicate properly but you usually only see them once.

In Waseem's defense (heh), I think it was good to have those ground rules posted ahead of time. That meant that everyone that showed up was generally respectful and he didn't have to constantly chase people around making sure they weren't setting pizza on the cabs in between holes of NTM. I will fully admit that I would have showed up with beer if I hadn't seen the rules ahead of time. In fact, during the two gatherings I attended, I don't ever recall him ever asking someone to stop doing anything. I'm sure we weren't perfect, but the issues were probably only minor and he could overlook them so that everyone had a good time.
