It's for Japan Only at this point (need confirmation for US and EU markets) but I'm guessing it'll apply to all territories. Considering that now the lower end version of the PS3 will have HDMI and the only difference between the high end version and the low end one is the hard drive size, what point is there in getting the high end version?

Edit:

What I wrote earlier was incorrect.

arent there other things missing on the low end one?

if not then ill be getting the cheaper one.

is sony going 180 on this out of desperation or something?

wii got them scared?

all their marketing/press blunders catching up with them?

Don't think there's 2 hdmi ports on the high end. They took that out at the last e3 i think.

Low end is missing the card reader and wifi.

Also worth mentioning is the low end ps3 just got a 10,000yen knocked off the price (49800 now, $425US). No idea if the US/EU will get new pricing too..

nice, if this is true.

The HDMi port on the low-end PS3 is a smart move IMO, so basically the only difference is the HDD size which interchangable anyway I believe.

'Bout fucking time Sony pulled their out their ass on this.

A price drop across the board is also a good idea and hopefully follows through to the States.

Iirc there s less connectivity too, no Memory stick/SD card slot, reduced number of usb ports, no linux, and the like... not sure though, i ve lost interest in the hardware itself.

Pricing in the US stays the same.

Low end is missing Wifi as well. On another note, could you imagine the amount of backlash in Japan which would make Sony drop 10,000 yen off the price and add in features.

Well the addition of the HDMI port on the Low End PS3 is a nice touch. As for other missing things, there is still the loss of the wireless controllers and no card reader. Not sure if there is anything else.

cause they know if they dont meet their Japanese markets demands, they royally screw themselves and give this generations console war to Microsoft on a silver platter.

Loss of wireless controllers? What are you talking about?

Wireless controllers are not present in the $499.99 (US) version. From the reports I read, you will have to add in a Bluetooth Dongle in order to get wireless controllers to work.

I haven't read anything stating that Sony will bother making both wireless and wired controllers. The only things I've read were lack of Wi-Fi support, no memory device support, and no chrome finish.

i think the words low-end and PS3 in the same sentence = roffle wafflz

wasn't this supposed to be the system that defined high end quality? :kekeke:

Upgradable hard drive Yes, 20 GB Yes, 60 GB
Blu-ray drive Yes Yes
HDMI port Yes, 1 Yes, 2
Composite AV Cables Yes Yes
Bluetooth controllers Yes Yes
Flash card reader No Yes
Wi-Fi adapter No Yes
Silver-colored logo and trim No Yes

I got this off wikipedia. If these are the only differences, sign me up for the "tard pack". I don't even know what a flash card reader is for, I don't have a wireless connection and don't plan to upgrade anytime soon, and the silver crap does not matter at all.

Wow that definitely is cool. I'll definitely look into the PS3 now that I see it will support wireless controllers out of the box.

Course I won't be buying one until sometime next September.
