A consolized MVS is still kind of dumb in my mind. These games were made to be played in an arcade machine. Save the money you would have used on a Neo Geo X and buy yourself an actual arcade cabinet. With some shopping you can find one cheap. I bought my Neo MVS candy for $250 and that included the four slot inside. I got my first Neo Geo standup arcade machine, a converted Xybots cabinet, for free with a two slot and a couple games thrown in just because people wanted to get rid of it. Honestly, the idea of playing MVS on a TV is novel, but it ruins the entire experience if you ask me. That's the main reason I never bought a home system. These games are fun, and some of them are good, but once you turn it into yet another game system it sort of loses some of its magic. Having the arcade machine in the house, garage or basement... It makes games like Burning Fight seem cool as shit.
Yeeeeah. $250 on a candy cabinet is pretty much rare as shit. You usually expect to spend $500, and not everyone lives in CA where they're exported to, so it's another $500 to have to freighted across the country. I agree that the best experience for an MVS is on a cabinet, specifically for me the candies because they're comfortable and had better monitors. But not everyone has space for cabinets, in any room, so it isn't always possible. I got all my cabinets when I still lived with my parents, and I'm lucky enough to have a few friends willing to lug them all up to a third floor apartment.
I had an AES briefly, until I saw how expensive the good games were, I quickly sold the system and got an Astro City. The next best thing when you don't have space for these things is to get the best video quality you can and play it on your television. Whether with joystick controllers, or with those massive ones I see around that are a complete arcade control panel. I'd love to have one of those, sometimes individual controllers tend to move around.
More people should take the time to learn how to solder. You can build your own CMVS in a day and enjoy the hell out of it. But I'd say your best going with a CGA to VGA converter at this point. Seems like new televisions are really random about what inputs they decide to still include on them. Component is hard enough to find for some reason, but at least they all seem to still have VGA. Means I have two Neobitz I can't use anymore.
