Are the riots because the police shot a man dead, or because Tottenham is a shitty place filled with shitty people ready loot and burn their own shops down?

A bit of both really!, but looters will loot at the end of the day, there is meant to be a riot in another part of london in half an hour its all over twitter and all the shops there have closed due to the fact that its on like donkey kong.

...so they wanted to protest the police's having shot a man by looting their own community's stores? I used to think that was just a Yank thing to do.

People are awesome bro. Around here, when the Phillies win a world series the fans celebrate by destroying the city. I'm pretty sure they'd burn the entire thing to the ground if the Eagles ever win a Super Bowl.

Just so long as this doesn't prevent Pret a Manger from continuing to spread across the US --I want them in Minneapolis and Los Angeles as soon as possible.

Seriously though, this whole thing seems to be a bit extra bullshitty to me:

This is the scenario from several major sources:

 • Mark Duggan (black, not related to Hacksaw Jim), is armed with a weapon.
 • The death occurs during an operation where specialist firearm officers and officers from Operation Trident, the unit which deals with gun crime in the African and Caribbean communities, are attempting to carry out an arrest.
 • There is an exchange of gunfire.
 • Mr Duggan is a passenger in a minicab and is shot after an apparent exchange of fire. A police officer's radio is later found to have a bullet lodged in it.
 • the 29-year-old Duggan also happens to be father of four
 • Peaceful protests start
 • Looting starts

Seriously, the hell with that.

You can't compare this with Rodney King or most other police brutality cases in the US. This is just the natural result of police activity.

Yeah, sports riots in the US are weird like that - why the hell does the winning city riot? In the rest of the world, the losing city riots.

this place is a powder keg full of angry minority communities just looking for a reason to riot

people of london, this is what happens when you let these scumbags in

This whole story makes me laugh, some chap has a fire fight with police and dies and the locals kick off yet why didn't these people go riot/loot when innocent Ian Tomlinson got attacked and killed by police. maybe it wouldn't have taken over 2 years for the officer to get charged.

This even dumber than those riots up in BC.

This might be a situation where I'd look the other way to riot police being a little extra forceful....

Good thing you never have to worry about that :glee:

New Orleans should be the example of how a city celebrates a championship; no rioting, looting, or tomfoolery....we got all that out of our system 5 years earlier anyway.

Not sure if this is angry rioting or celebratory rioting, like when Maryland might beat Duke in basketball and the students riot and flip cars over

but either way, UEFA must do everything it can to ensure that Tottenham FC never win any silverware.

New Orleans is under flames and gunfire 24-7 so when it becomes peaceful it makes the news.
