Ha, he flips his leg over those chairs like I do my kid's mini desk chairs. Like he's hopping on to a horse or something.

I also liked his Capt. Morgan pose.

PS Edit - LOL... notice Beverly Crusher checking him out when he does his chair mount. (pics from another forum post)

Apparently he had a back injury that made sitting normally a little painful and awkward for him--and this style of sitting just suits the character.

Not exactly a graceful flyer, but a good effort

It definitely helps that all those Federation chairs are standardized in height. I tried doing this to a rolling Aeron and a dining room high chair with little success.

[EDIT added more to the spoilers]

Okay, folks, Into Darkness... or ST:ID as the kids are acronyming now.

Who's seen it? I know it was released seemingly everywhere but the US first, I'd love to here impressions. I wrote a general, spoiler-free review in the movie thread, which can be summarized: "If you like the previous Abrams film, you'll like this one." That and the lens flair was awful in 3D (but was notably only on the bridge). But now I want to dive into the many spoilers.

Spoiler:

The first and only review I started immediately spoiled that Khan was the villain. I was a little peeved so I backed off of reading anything. Thankfully that wasn't enough to seriously affect the experience.

Let's get to the most powerful scene in the movie and an obvious twist that I thought they successfully pulled off (for the most part): Seeing Kirk sacrifice himself instead of Spock was brilliant. Seeing Spock lose control as Kirk dies was also excellent. Having Spock cry "Khaaaan!" immediately afterward? A little too much, but I let it slide. It's impressive they could rehash such a famous scene but still make it so effective. Before Spock yells, the theater I was in was dead, dead silent for Kirk's "death".

Yeah, about that death... I get how they got around that without resorting to a sequel (and thus really milking Wrath of Khan), but I'll be honest: I spent the finale of the movie wondering "ah man, what if they'd just let him die?" and then truly take Star Trek into new territory. Okay, I get it: the relationship between Kirk and Spock has become the core of these reboots, even more so than the originals, but Spock himself has become such an interesting entity that I could imagine successful stories could be written without Kirk. Still, I accept that it's not an awful idea to keep Kirk around and the way they did wasn't a terrible cop out, at least not by Trek standards and definitely not by what we'd just seen.

Bruce Greenwood was good as Pike in the previous film, and was even better in this film... too bad he bought the farm--it did, however, bring a very nice touch with Spock's mind meld. Seemed like the right thing to do that any Vulcan would do seeing another in need.

These reboots are definitely more about the duo of Kirk/Spock than the trio with McCoy--and I appreciate it. It's almost a result of the material getting more serious: When Scotty resigned I was actually relieved because Pegg was just a little too silly (and now that little guy from the first one is back as his mini-me? ugh) for the stuff that was happening. Chechov too so I was happy to see him relegated to engineering so his accent that was cute in the first half of the first film wouldn't waste more screen time. The characters that do get seemingly more prominent placement are the more serious ones: Uhura and Sulu. From the original series incarnations, I think Uhura is by far the biggest improvement in the reboots (I'd say Spock is tied or a little better, but he was great before).

It was nice to see Section 31, DS9 leaves a fingerprint!

The reasons Robocop was the villain make sense, and it was neat to see his daughter worked in using a character from the old series, but his entire plot seemed a little weird and a bit too convenient. Section 31 hid that Dreadnought so well it seemed a little far-fetched.

I wish they'd made Khan a little more sympathetic--I think that would've made the character perfect. More like Moriarty from TNG.

The sadness of the parents at the beginning really did work, well done scenes.

The scene with Nimoy seemed promising, but was unnecessary fan service accompanied by just too obvious a "DRAMATIC" musical cue. However, it did lead my mind away from thinking Kirk would be the one to sacrifice himself.

The opening sequence, while not as impressive as the sequence that opened the previous film, was enjoyable and did a good job of cramming a lot of Trek-stuff into a short period.

After seeing the laughable portrayal of Klingons in deleted scenes from the previous Star Trek (they look like bumbling fools in dumb helmets trying to hold Nero), I was actually impressed by the Klingons in this film. There isn't enough to get a bead on them (thanks to Khan's intervention), but they seem interesting enough.

The first terrorist attack wasn't as bad as the trailers made it out to be... but that second one at the end--holy shit! Almost matched the WTF moment of Vulcan getting destroyed.

I'd heard Abrams wanted to start a new TV series and you get that sense from the ending. Too bad it apparently didn't work out.

I thought it was weird to see the card at the end dedicated to all the veterans of post-9/11 conflict... was he guilty about the massive terrorist act on SF? Shit, you know Al Qaeda now wishes they had a starship!

Slowly making my way through DS9, up to half way through season 3. People tell me it gets going at the end of season 3, I really hope so because up to now it's been properly shit, ferengi after ferengi episode.

Ferengi are terrible characters, pure pantomime, plus I hate the way they're always getting their ears wanked off by some blonde human bint like it's the funniest joke that's ever been written.

Don't usually like it when they tag things on to the end of videos on youtube, but the game on the end of this one actually looks quite interesting. I feel like I've seen it somewhere before though.

I just about forgot about this thread.

Almost done with the Voyager series, goal is to finish up the last season by the end of the year. When it first came out, I caught a show here or there but the last few months going through the series episode by episode, it fast became one of my favorites. Definitely on par with TNG for me. Only thing I'd change is Seven needed to show more skin though. Sigh...

I'm all behind the notion of "different strokes for different folks," but putting Voyager on par with TNG is a very different stroke. It's like a getting a clogged artery when you're expecting a nine iron.

We have to stop quoting him before STK finds out what he said. Don't awake the beast!

Ha. Calm thyselves. I'll put the series b/w TNG and DS9 for sure. TNG will always be my fav. Coming on the heals of re-watching DS9, I was just pleasantly surprised with how good Voyager was.

No harm, no foul. In spite of what was typed, I don't have a seething hate for Voyager. I can't talk about the original series, but it seems like Voyager just wasn't as good on the whole. Sure, there were a few really good moments (future Borg! The Voth!), but you could really tell that the team was just working for the weekend a lot of the time.

Oh - and this might have been discussed earlier in the thread, but has anybody else seen "The Captains"? It's a documentary of sorts with William Shatner meeting up with all the other captains of the franchise. It's worth a view if it's still on Netflix.

I think this is how I would put it too, having been told how shit voyager was for so long, when I actually watched it each moment I didn't hate was a real bonus, to the point that I was watching whole seasons of bonuses and eventually noticed I was having a great time watching it. I still maintain that plenty of the early TNG episodes are far worse than anything voyager ever put out.

BUMP.

Star Trek appears to be on an upward swing in terms of shows - we’re currently being inundated with them.

Picard
Discovery
Lower Decks
Strange New Worlds (Airs in may and has… Rebecca Romijn???? WTF.)

And I saw there was some bullshit cgi cartoon called Prodigy that is on Nickelodeon?

I’m going to watch Discovery now (wish me luck) but frankly I’m dismayed it’s set prior to TOS and that Strange New Worlds is again set just before TOS but featuring Spock and Captain Pike and the absolutely still gorgeous Rebecca Romijn???

I’ll take any Trek as long as it’s good (doubtful) but I’m a bit annoyed we don’t have a next “Next Generation” - I suppose that’s Picard but frankly show me a new class of federation officers building on all
The good that came before them. Give me lasting peace between the Federation and the (now) Romulan Free State.

Anyway, I just wanted to bitch about Trek a bit and talk about the TOS rpg that I’ll be running with my gaming group soon.
