I also had a 3DO when it was in it's "prime" and it was pretty cool, for about 6 months. And by pretty cool I mean that it had exactly 3 games worth playing.

Sam Sho
SSFIIT
Road Rash

That's it, everything else was FMV or crude 3D garbage.

It was immediately out classed to the point of embarrassment by the Saturn and PS1. Even Sam Sho and SSFIIT weren't that great. Yes they were excellent ports but you were still stuck playing them with the awful 3DO controller, unless you managed to get your hands on one of those 6 button controllers. Also don't forget that if you wanted to play 2 players you had to daisy chain the controllers together. It was a shitty system that failed for good reason.

We had a 3DO when you could get a used one for around $100 or so, after the PS1 and Saturn were out. I enjoyed Guardian War too. I was never a Road Rash fan, so I never found out what all the fuss was about. I remember seeing Lucienne's Quest for full price at EBX multiple times, and I wish I had bought it. I only have the Japanese version of that game now, and I believe it won't boot on a US system because it doesn't have the kanji on the disc.

I don't know if 3DO was ever much of a thing in Japan. Panasonic may have produced the first models, and released them in Japan, but the original concept came from Trip Hawkins and was American in origin. It makes sense then that there ended up being a bigger marketing push in the US.

That's what I was going to say. I had a 3do near launch and those controllers sucked. I remember loosening a screw in the pad or something but it stil sucked. Terrible controller.

Even after I got SSF2T port on 3do, I still preferred playing my old SF2T on SNES.

Agree with you for the most part, I would just make one caveat. If you were a sports fan, Madden Football, Slam N' Jam '95 and FIFA were amazing and blew away anything else at the time.

Daisy chaining the contriollers was a problem? I mean it was better than the Turbografx and CDi, where there was only one port and you had to buy a multitap. Other than that some 3rd party controllers had no female plug at all, it wasn't an issue.

Yeah, the EA stuff gave us a sneak peak of the early PS1 games.

Terry was talking about the daisy chaining...I was talking about the poor quality directional pad.

But the daisy chaining was retarded as well.

I meant both.

SSFIIT was barely playable on the standard 3DO controller. The D pad totally sucked ass and the 6 button layout was incredibly awkward with only 3 face buttons.

A multi tap is still a million times better than daisy-chaining. With the daisy-chaining you're at the mercy of whoever was holding the player 1 controller. If they moved around a lot it was easy to loose connection or them just tugging on or unplugging your cord because they were a dick.

Forgive me kernow, for I have goobed.

I got these two mediocre condition complete copies of 3DO ports to replace the 3DO games of my youth. They aren't rare games or anything. I just noticed I didn't own them anymore.

Other than the voice sample quality, the port of Samurai Shodown is really impressive to. Almost arcade perfect I need to figure out who ported it.
I modded my 3DO with the ODE and then never touched it again, lol. I've been curious to get that 6 button controller for Street Fighter though.

I know Japan's version of the 3DO is sought after more than US due to the 240p switch on the FZ-1's

Yes, the dpads were not great on any 3do pad I used back in the day. This Logitech controller was probably the best. It was too stiff, but still an improvement. A lot better than the mushy ones anyway.

I don't think I ever saw a third-party 3do controller in stores when I was actively buying games for it.

Maybe I saw a Goldstar one when that console variant was released, but by then I think I had already moved on and IDGAF...

I’ve actually been looking for a 6 button 3DO controller for awhile. The Hori one looks nice but brings over $100 which is more than I’d like to pay. Anyone try the Capcom 6 button controller?

I recall reading that they won't work correctly with SFII. Is that why you modded it, alec?

Yup. I remember the one of these pads my brothers and I had in the 90's. We were flabbergasted that the middle button on the top row was inexplicably the wrong button for SF2. I'm not sure what other game they could have been targeting. The ironic thing is they made a second revision with a new board layout, which I have now, and they added a 2nd player dongle, but didn't fix the button!

Someone posted instructions online to mod both revisions of the pad, and they're both very simple quick soldering projects.

I have them for the Genesis and SNES.
They are weird, if you use them like a normal pad you'll probably hate 'em.
You kinda need to hold the dpad side like an arcade stick then put your thumb somewhat under the button side and come at the buttons with your fingertips.
That said once you get used to them an their weird angles they work ok.
The 3D0 version is pretty rare (mail order only iirc) and EXPENSIVE.
I think it used an SNES type d-pad with red buttons and has a Y adapter hanging off the end for 2P.
I'd suggest just getting your hands on a SNES->3D0 adapter and just using SNES pads or hunt down one of these.

EDIT
I got curious and looked, fuck that SNES adapter and the CPS pad seems to average well over $100.
Just ebay one of those Bluetooth adapters and call it a day.

Guadian War was fun. Road Rash was excellent - never didn't really get into the series, but I enjoyed the 3DO release. The first Fifa was also really good and I'm not a sportsball fan.

My favorite game was Twisted - that live action multiplayer board game. Freaking awesome to bring out when friends were over. Miss that game...

Yes yes. I had a friend whose parents were getting divorced so they were buying him things, I guess out of guilt, so they bought him a 3DO and we had so much fun playin Twisted with a group of friends that’s was my favorite too.

I’ll add that’s one I would be ok with if LRG bought the rights to and released on modern consoles like night trap

Thanks for bringing up Twisted. Great game that still holds up. One of the best party games of all time. Not sure who owns the rights, but it's a shame it's never been rereleased.
