Recommendation on SNES S-Video cable needed (with no checkerboarding)

Hi, a friend of mine asked me for help in finding a S-Video cable for his SNES (they also work on Gamecube and N64), that isn't a total POS. I mention that last part because a lot of them introduce a "checkerboard" pattern (shamelessly stealing this example: http://www.micro-64.com/features/svideoarticle/PDcomparison.png ), the majority of them you run across these days do this from what I've read.

Years ago I bought a $30 Monster-like PS2 S-video cable when I saw the same checkerboard stuff when using my PS2 on a capture card (overkill but I had figured, correctly, that these overkill cables wouldn't have the checkerboard), I looked for Monster cables that work on SNES and the prices are pretty high (my friend's not gonna pay $50 for a cable), but hopefully there's one more in his price range that you guys have experience with and know what I'm talking about with the checkerboard pattern where you can say for sure they don't do it.

Kinda a weird post, I know, but I figured if anyone would know, it'd be you guys.

Brand is pretty hit or miss, but I haven't had a bad S-Video only cable, one without composite.

I've added an S-Video connector to the SNES, tapped Luma and Chroma straight from the Multi connector. I got checkerboard pattern, too. Not sure if if any components is needed to eliminate it when tapped from the connector, though.

Thanks guys. I offered to add a jack to his SNES but he says he wants it unmodded. I'll look for S-video-only cables. Funny, the Monsterish cable I have for PS2 has Composite too but as I said there's no checkerboard with it.

I got about 12 of those snes/n64/gamecube monster cables in an ebay lot a while back. No checkerboarding.

Shoot me a pm, I can part with one or two.

I just use the MadCatz s-video multi-cable they sell at Gamestop: http://www.gamestop.com/accessories/madcatz-universal-s-av-cable-next-gen/18698

It's alright. I never really noticed any checkerboarding before...
I snapped some pics if you're interested. Taken on my Sony Wega HD CRT
Here's the closest (and only example) I could get to something resembling checkerboarding (but it may just be the crappy camera I'm using): http://i.imgur.com/NEOXwpH.jpg

& here are a few others pics (no checkerboarding, same cable):

Ellert I think I see it in your pics :/ I have a similar multiconsole cable I use when not using RGB, and I see checkerboarding in it.

not sonic, we'll be in touch!

I'm interested in one too, depending on the price.

I hope you don't mind a low pay count user such as myself inquiring the availability of such a cable.

as long as its s-video only it shouldnt have a problem. I had one which was s-video and composite and my gamecube picture was fuzzy while the snes picture had the checkerboard effect as well. bought it for cheap on ebay and i guess i lucked out on it working for this long.

The Monster purple cable always worked for me with no checkering. Highly recommended.

Perhaps this is just with Laserdisc players, but using a good quality, more modern tv, the 3D comb filter is far better than what's on players (2D)...in other words, composite actually lands up looking better than S-Video (which it does, I've actually tried it)...

I wonder if the same goes for game consoles...

I gotta take a look at mine after reading this. I have official Nintendo brand S-Video cables that I got when the GCN came out so it works with the 64 and SNES. I did notice a faint line down the left side of the screen when I used it on my old television. I didn't notice it on my plasma when I was testing it out.

If that weird line is on your SNES that's something inherent to the design (you even see it in RGB), some consoles have it worse than others. If you have an official cable I bet you're just fine.
