If we're talking about movies, I prefer Ninjas as well.

If we're talking about real life, I'm a Ronin guy.

Samurais honourable? Well, history says otherwise.

Ninja - practical combat tactics.
Samurai - Honorable but not practical.

This.

Historically, Taijutsu (hand to hand component of Ninjutsu system) was born of Samurai abusing, raping and pillaging the regular folk... who learned to fight back (very simplified). That's why a lot of traditional Japanese weapons (Kusari Gama, Nunchaku [rice flail], Bo/Jo etc) all resemble farming equipment.

In games? Ninjas. I mean Ninja Gaiden is better than any samurai game i've ever played. In movies Samurai all day.

I wanna know, karate guy or body builder?

I admit, I've thought ninjas were cool for like 95% of my time on this earth.

...and both are more or less slaves of their masters.

No thanks, I'll stick with the Ronin. Mushashi was better than all those guys anyway.
This.

Guy's life was unreal. True badass.
As far as movies, both are awesome. The Lone Wolf and Cub movies are great, and can't go wrong with Zatoichi. Although the latter wasn't really a ninja or samurai.

What are ghe best ninja/samurai movies?
The Pass of the Great Buddha a/k/a Sword of Doom...
...plus everything from Kurosawa & Kobayashi.
Damn you Oliver, that was gonna be my response.

In keeping with the thread going against the fiction of the honorable Samurai, I'm also going to suggest "Harakiri" (1962).

Talking about Ninja Movies...Reza por tu muerte ninja! Pray for Death. Shoko Sugi, the man. Anyone remember Black Eagle? Van Damn was the bad guy, pretty cool movie for what it was.

Let's just be honest though....Japanese movies suck, at least when it comes to Ninjas, karate or any sort of choreography, they're talented allright but just amateurs when compared to Chinese martial art movies.

When it comes to martial arts the Chinese have it down. Thus the Iga Clan, rooted in the teachings of Kung Fu, more discipline, more dedication to their craft.

Peregrine Falcon for life...

I have an affinity for the Samurai's honorable code of conduct rather then the sneaky ethics Ninja's use so Samurai for me.

What about animated movies then? Ninja Scroll comes to mind, not exactly a pedantic documentary-like take on the Ninja topic, but it delivers the shivers. Genmaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Edit:

Damn you Oliver, that was gonna be my response.

The nerd in me knew, it was -- the decent guy side just didn't care ;).

Well, if you condemn the whole Nippon for neglecting their own evil superheroes in cinematography, somebody had to play Gary Cooper.

Samurai. They're superior units in both Age of Empires 3 and Shogun: Total War 2.

Zatoichi Motherfuckers!

Technically a Ronin/ex yakuza, but his films are definitely part of the Samurai film canon, Lady Snowblood is also great, and I've already seen them mentioned but Lone Wolf and Cub is the tits (the manga and the live action movies)
