What can you tell me about Memphis, TN?

Ok, besides Elvis and that stuff I already know.

I habe been given the offer of working abroad in the US, either in a Pharmacy retail store or research laboratory, and Memphis is one of the cities they have given me the possibility of choosing. I would like to know something about it in terms of housing costs, availability of transport and why not, if the crime rate is due to specific neighborhoods where violence is present or on the contrary, it's a pretty unsafe city to live in.

Thanks and happy New Year.

What? NYC is pretty safe, in fact I believe is the safest big city in the US. 2 years ago I went to Harlem at 10 pm and was walking about 15 mins dragging my luggage until I found my friend's home and I didn't feel any danger. Rudy Giulanni cleaned the city in the 80's and 90's, in fact NYC was at that time pretty much how Taxi Driver portrayed it, Times Square being a cesspool full of pimps, whores, crackheads and porn theaters.

Do that compare city thing to Los Angeles and San Fran.

You might be shocked to learn that SF tops LA in car theft, burglary, nearly double in larceny and about dead even in murder.

Yeah as has already been noted, if you're picking a place to live in Tennessee, Memphis is your best bet for getting shot.

Detroit is below the national average in larceny theft.

I guess there's nothing left to steal.

What about Knoxville or Nashville?

Because that web someone posted can be misleading. You could guess that some cities are like Mogadishu, but I bet that high crime rates are not widespread along the urban area.

1st review these statistics:
http://www.city-data.com/city/Memphis-Tennessee.html
FYI, Memphis is the highest population city within the state of Tennessee.

It is true that Memphis is the most sedentary city of the most obese nation of this world.

The public school system here is in shambles, textbooks from the 80's, gangs, drugs, & rampant teen pregnancy. This city has managed to regress to full scale segregation where the public schools are 99.9% black and the private schools are predominantly white.

Violent crimes are more concentrated in the blighted areas which are predominantly found in North and South Memphis. The road known as Poplar is the lifeline of Memphis and a residence close to the lifeline would be wise.

The safest and most established residential areas include Harbor Town (the Bluffs facing the Mississippi River), Chickasaw Gardens, River Oaks, Red Acres, and Central Gardens.

I’ve been living in Memphis for 7 years and I’ve never personally seen or been a victim of crime. My car has never been so much as “keyed”. The people here are generally very hospitable & courteous. The cost of living is low compared to other metropolitan areas of the USA. The average cost of rent is $670 per month. You can find a smaller home in a good area within the City of Memphis for $150,000 but if you go out to Cordova, Lakeland, Desoto County, or Bartlett, you can buy much more house w/ larger lot size and pay less property tax and have a short commuting distance to the City of Memphis.

Midtown is probably the best midrange area of Memphis that I can recommend. It's known for it's culture and open minded residents. Senses is currently the most popular club, Beale St. is a fun for the weekends, Oak Court mall is the safest. If you need a church or a pawn shop, Memphis has more than perhaps any other city in the nation. There are also a ton of strip clubs here, 2nd only to the quantity of Startbucks coffee shops that you will find.

Major industry for Memphis includes:
FedEx World Headquarters
International Paper World Headquarters
Autozone World Headquarters

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is in Memphis.

We have Pandas at the zoo!!

People mostly travel by automobile here. Although we do have a bus system, it’s slow & inefficient. We do have the “240 Loop” which is a fast, multi-lane highway that circles Memphis. It’s relatively effective for traveling across expansive distances of Memphis. Keep in mind that Memphis is approximately 280 square miles in size (the Mayor is aggressively annexing).

Unfortunately, racism is alive in Memphis. I mostly hear complaints about black on white racism, whites being the minority. I’m half Chinese so I’ve managed to remain on the sidelines in this regard.
Races in Memphis:
Black (61.4%)
White Non-Hispanic (33.3%)
Hispanic (3.0%)
Other race (1.5%)
Two or more races (1.0%)

Mayor Herrington just won his 5th term to office (he’s acquired the stigma of being corrupt). His campaign slogan was “Shake them haters off”. I don’t follow local politics but supposedly this event has further stimulated the “white flight”, where white Memphis residents are moving further East (Germantown, Collierville, Piperton) or fleeing to Desoto Country in Mississippi.

If you have any other specific questions or concerns I’ll be happy to oblige.

i think amazon.com's main shipping warehouse is in memphis too. so you'd basically get stuff overnighted for free. :mr_t:

couldn't pay me to live in any of those bible belt states, it's seriously sad how run down some of those states are, we need to stop shipping aid out of the country and "rebuild" are own ghettos, but that's just me...

Sold!

And, building on DashK's comment, the shipping is great because FedEx is centered in Memphis so their airport is one of the world's major airports (but dominated by cargo so most people don't realize that).

Shawn left out the Peabody Ducks, which are cool in their own right (and he's the one who showed me them).

Vlad, where are you coming from and, out of curiosity, what are your other choices here? Keep in mind that Memphis isn't going to be as cosmopolitan as most major European cities, despite its size (like a lot of American cities, size isn't an indicator). I remember you've mentioned an interest in moving to the States for some time.

I live an hour drive north of Memphis. I have a lot of friends that live in "Memphrica". I HATE driving in Memphis. Haven't had a wreck, but damn close a million times. Poplar Avenue is the worst. Oak Court is probably the safest mall. I usually hit Wolfchase if I'm on that end. I don't usually head into downtown Memphis. One time, a friend and I ended up in Orange Mound trying to get to the Mall of Memphis (Mall of Murder) about 10 years ago. Very scary time lol. That mall has been closed and demolished now.

My girlfriends family lives in the Central Gardens historic district of Memphis.

Unlike 90% of the 33% white population, her family lives in midtown as opposed to the shitstain suburbs of Germantown and Cordova (seriously... the worst suburbs in the country). Central Gardens is roughly 5-10 minutes walking distance from Orange Mound, a favorite of Memphis' own Triple 6 Mafia.

Hmmm cops in the black ghettos refuse to enforce laws as "they" arent worth dying over.

Anyway I feel like Memphis is -

a) something like 75 years overdue for the big earthquake

b) anywhere from 3-5 years away from uncontrollable race riots

Just my 2pennies as a born and raised Tennessean.

not to bust your balls man but Giuliani didn't "clean up" New York; the mayors before him got the ball rolling (like Dinkins) and Giuliani stood up on a soap box and let William Bratton spew his broken window theory bullcrap. and FYI giuliani wasn't in office in the 80's his term started in 94'.

I'm from the South, and Memphis is a shithole. I wouldn't go anywhere near it.
