I must get the VC version of Super Castlevania IV. I remember playing the hell out of that when I was a kid.

The only Castlevania game I don't really like playing is Simon's Quest. I remember renting it as a kid and loving the atmosphere. The way the game played didn't really do it for me.

I'm only missing the Gameboy ones. I wanted to get them to finish the collection, but they are pretty expensive when complete. I think I like Super Castlevania IV and the GBA ones the best though.

I sold my pc engine Dracula X last year and downloaded the wii rom instead. Now I only own Dracula X Chronicles (PSP), SOTN (PS1), Lord of Shadows (PS3), Dracula X (Snes), Bloodlines (Gen), Castlevania I II III (Nes). I did own the gba and nds games, but sold them off last year also.

It's a good port, IMO. Having only one action button can make the controls a bit tricky here and there.

Yeah, I haven't played this one.

Reading up on it on the wiki, it sounds like Simon's Quest was more of a sequel to this version of Castlevania than the NES version.

It's interesting to note that they were playing with non linear explroation and item requirements way back with the beginning of the series.

They should remaster this game. Simon is the first Castlevania hero and needs a remake that does him some justice and updates him. Put the original game in as an extra bonus.

...as far as i'm concerned, CV is 2D. There is no 3D CV worth your time, honestly.

When I played 'Lords of Shadow' I felt like I played the game before. If you've played games like 'Shadows of Colusus', 'GOW', 'DMC' or anything of the like you're going to be telling yourself 'Yeah, I've seen that.. Yeah.. I've been there.. oh, I know how to beat this..' throughout the whole game.

As a game, it's fantastic. It's a bit of a hybrid of other game types, but it's still good.

It's primarily an action adventure game in the vein of God of War or Devil May Cry. You kill monsters, you gather their essence, you use the essence points to buy new moves. There are hidden inventory power ups, puzzling elements, some great chase/riding sequences, some interesting level design, an epic soundtrack that really makes you feel like a fantasy hero, good fighting mechanics and techniques, wonderful visuals, a great story and a top flight voice over. This is a magnificent AAA title that was sadly overlooked.

Is it Castlevania? Inasmuch as you're a holy knight on a quest to vanquish evil and you're killing all kinds of gothic fantasy/horror monsters in castle and wilderness type environments.

Spiritually, there is enough of the old Castlevania games in Lords of Shadow that you can see it as inheriting many of the basic concepts and design elements of the older games.

But it's connection to the series in terms of actually, definitively being a 'CASTLEVANIA' game is tenuous. Thematic and spiritually, all the pieces are in place. But the lore and world building is all new. They pass it off as a prequel and create some threadbare connections to the Belmonts.

If you want a great game, get it. Don't let people discourage you. It's a great game, but it takes about an hour of gameplay to really get a feel for it (probably it's only real weakness.)

If you're hoping for Castlevania in 3D, there are 3D games more faithful to the IP. However, none of those games are as good as Lords of Shadow. LoS is good enough to play through. It's worth 60 bucks to me. If you're not sure, jump on it if you see it for 20 or less. Or just rent and play through a few levels.
