had some late night time to kill this weekend, so I watched a few oddball, low budget films on Netflix:

Escape from Tomorrow
Ok...so the entire film was filmed guerrilla style at Disney World...I can definitely respect this...

But for the most part, the film is just fucking terrible. A guy and his shitty life all too common in modern America. Over and hour of mundane shit with some mildly interesting stuff sprinkled in. In the end, it's boring. The ending is down right bizarre...

Primer
A VERY low budget film (some odd $7000) with a very complicated and often hard to follow plot. The concept is very solid and the entire thing is obviously written by a science geek...but the presentation is a bit flat (and, complicated). I watched it last night and then went elsewhere for a plot explanation, I didn't feel like watching it a second time to pick up on the small clues scattered throughout.

Watching Pacific Rim right now. Absolutely love this movie, it's a shame the fucking sequel just got canceled.

White Lightnin'- I think the Whites are terrible people and don't deserve any of the attention they have gotten in the last decade but this is worth a watch.

Mission Impossible 5 - lol THIS is what was getting rave reviews? 1's a classic, untoppable obviously. For some reason I appear to be the only one who really liked 3 and honestly can't figure out why people dislike it so much, Hoffman's villain was such a memorable, unstoppable force. Skipped the fourth one. Came in five minutes later to see 5 and missed the goddamned airplane stunt.

Well anyways the best scene in the movie was at the opera. Overall forgettable, though.

Because it's predictable as fuck. MI1 probably would have been more predictable, too, if it didn't seem impossible that Cruise planned to begin his movie series with the biggest possible slap in the face of tv series fans by using Phelps as the traitor. But in the third movie? You could see that shit coming from five minutes in.

I won't watch 5, because I'm sick of nice looking trailers tricking me into thinking they might make another one as good as the first. 4 was an absolute chunk of shit, too.

I love how both of us don't even bother bringing up 2.

Yeah me and the rest of the world never even watched the Mission: Impossible tv series, so I guess that's why none of us care about Phelps turning coat in the movie.

Well, yeah, you and your generation, sure. But you were probably pretty young when the first Tom Cruise movie came out. The people that movie was aimed at grew up with the tv series in perpetual reruns.

I still remember watching it in the theater with my grandpa, a few months shy from 9. That ending on the train is still one of my favorite action sequences of all-time, OF ALL-TIME. "RED LIGHT! GREEN LIGHT!"

One thing I wanna mention...people keep saying how Tom Cruise still looks young. But I have to admit, he looked his age in this one.

edit: from wikipedia

Several cast members of the original 1966–73 TV series reacted negatively to the film.

Actor Greg Morris, who portrayed Barney Collier in the original television series, was reportedly disgusted with the film's treatment of the Phelps character, and he walked out of the theater before the film ended.[10] Peter Graves, who played Jim Phelps in the original series as well as in the late-1980s revival, also disliked how Phelps turned out in the film.[11] Graves had been offered a role playing Phelps, but turned it down when he learned his character was going to be revealed to be a traitor.

Martin Landau, who portrayed Rollin Hand in the original series, expressed his own disgust concerning the film. In an MTV interview in October 2009, Landau stated, "When they were working on an early incarnation of the first one — not the script they ultimately did — they wanted the entire team to be destroyed, done away with one at a time, and I was against that. It was basically an action-adventure movie and not Mission. Mission was a mind game. The ideal mission was getting in and getting out without anyone ever knowing we were there. So the whole texture changed. Why volunteer to essentially have our characters commit suicide? I passed on it." He added, as a condemnation of the writers, "The script wasn't that good either."

These Final Hours

The trailer for this caught my eye a year or so ago. When I popped up on Netflix, I decided to give it a try.

While I'll never call it deep...it was very well done and well acted. The plot is simple and effective and everything works well. I strongly recommend watching this one.

It's on of those films you chew on for a few days after. Not necessarily about the movie, more about what you would do in the same situation...

I watched the show religiously in the 80's. The NES game based on it was great, too. I never really watched the original.

I liked the first and third movie, the second one was tolerable, but I've always been a fan of John Woo movies anyway. Ghost Protocol was a piece of garbage. Havent seen the newest one, but it looks like a bunch green-screened stunts cobbled together with car chases.

I like all the Mission Impossible except for 3...I need to re-watch it though as when i watched it, i was in out of nowhere town & a jacked up movie theater. It was creepy theater & we were the only one in it until a guy comes in & decides to sit right behind us. The whole time we kept thinking the dude was do some crazy shit.

The last MI movie seem more a James Bond flick.

Just saw Fred Dekkar's "The Monster Squad" and it was badass....basically it's Little Rascals meets Universal Monsters in 1987. Great little move from the guy who made "Night of the Creeps." Definitely worth a watch.

Well...being sick, and on my ass with nothing to do...I decided to watch this film. Where Blomkamp once again delivers with stunning special effects...the story falls flat on its face. Fist off, the entire movie feels like a Die Antwoord promotion or something. While those two are interesting, they are not great actors and quickly get annoying. To make things worse, the flip-flop characters get old...being "A" person this min only to flop to "B" person the next. This happens with nearly every character in the film...save Jackman...who is unrealistically over the top the entire time...

In short...it's a good looking mess of a film, well deserving of its crappy 30% on RT.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

I've kind of made it known in the past that I' not the largest fan of the Avengers. They're pretty flat story wise, acting wise and the action is often so over the top, it's at Michael Bay levels. If I were to write a RT review of the original, I would have given it a 60% at best.

With that said, I enjoyed this one more...not much more, just more. I'm actually surprised that the original scored higher on RT (92% -vs- 74%). James Spader as Ultron made the show for me...such an odd approach at a villain, the dialog is quirky and interesting. his mood swings from calm to madness are interesting to watch.

In the end, it's just as over the top and vapid as the rest, and still not even close to Guardians in terms of quality...but it was watchable.

WTF, no one posted in here for over a month.

Anyways, the new Bond flick. Average and filled with embarrassing cliches. I have given up all hope on ever seeing another Bond movie as great as Casino Royale, unless the director comes back and pulls a threepeat.

Also, Christoph Waltz's worst performance. He wasn't menacing in the least.

Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, this one...each time the hype is frothing, and each time the disappointment is bitter. I've learned my lesson.

FFS...even the skull character on the movie poster is just Bond dressed up in only the first three minutes of the film. What a joke.

SouthtownKid plz review

Christopher Waltz only cares about movies that protest racism and that perpetuate Protestant guilt. His heart simply wasn't in this one.

Not a ton of new movies that I want to watch. I do want to see Turbo Kid sometime soon though. I may rent it tonight.

Besides that, being laid up last week I just watched some favorites. Watched A Clockwork Orange and Casino as well as a ton of documentaries. Caught up on some 30 for 30 docs as well.

We did finally land up watching the 3d Hunger Games movie...it was good, as good as the other two. They've been surprisingly entertaining.

Take Shelter

Forgot about this one. This one had been on my radar but because it was a low key film, it kind of disappeared. Happened to come across it at the rental store and picked it up.

Good movie, I highly enjoyed it. Well written and acted. It sucks that movies like this do not get more attention.

Just saw Fred Dekkar's "The Monster Squad"

I don't know how old you are, regardless, it pains me that there are people that haven't seen this. I grew up on Monster Squad, The Goonies, and The Gate. All three will forever resonate in my cinematic palate.

Was also the perfect age for Goonies and Monster Squad. Those movies are etched in to my brain. I hope younger folks have movies of a similar quality to spark their imagination and promote kicking mythical beasts in the nards.

Finally watched Mission Impossible 5 as well. Didn't like it as much as 4 and I doubt I'd watch it again but it was worth a bag of popcorn and 2 hours of my time.

In my thirties, so it pains me to say that I didn't see this growing up, but when I saw it on Netflix...I was like "80s kids fighting monsters??? I'm IN!!!" That movie was awesome on so many levels.

Turbo Kid

Bit the bullet and rented this film.

I have to say, I can easily see why Hobo with a Shotgun got a 65% on RT and this film received a 87%. Hobo is a fun, over the top movie...plenty of ultra-violence and a decent enough plot to carry that violence. But...Turbo Kid is better in nearly every way. The movie is just more "fun"...its hard to explain but it just is. It' more lighthearted and somehow, the ultra-violence is definitely there but not as overwhelming as Hobo. For such a small budget film, the acting is solid and the effects/props/sets are all good enough to work believably in the film.

I strongly recommend it...it's been a while since I saw a movie that entertained me in this manner.
