This is just sickening.

Its not really even about guns or gun control. People like this are going to kill, the state of the world today is just whack.

[Updated at 3:51 p.m. ET] A federal law enforcement source tells CNN's John King the information from the scene is that the shooter arrived and headed directly toward and to his mother’s classroom. That and the other information now emerging - another family member killed, police interviews - lead them to believe his mother was the primary target. But they note he also came armed with clear intention of mass killing.

What a fucked up lunatic. With all the fucked up shit going on in the world, why is there always someone who raises the bar? I can't even imagine what those families, teachers, students, and friends are going through right now.

As a father, my heart goes out to all who are affected by this.

Don't blame guns.

we'd be speaking a mix of French, Spanish, and buying everything with pesos and francs (the Euro wouldn't need to exist). Oh yeah, and that Zimmerman Telegram? Not even necessary. We would be in line with the National Socialist Party of Germany.

jk - diplomacy would ensure our liberties and freedom.

Not technically, there's no need for guns to survive, you don't have to hunt your food, there's no real reason to own a gun for anyone at this stage in human history other than to do some sort of harm. Other countries seem to be doing well with more gun control. And if gun control could have stopped Tonk from being born? Who's to argue? :D

Hey Neira, rape happens as well...you and every other male should bank your sperm and chemically emasculate yourself just to make sure such an ugly crime never happens again.

Not comparable. A gun isn't apart of your own body, Unless you're robocop.

A fact that came up today, and one I hope people remember as they try to work through this tragedy, is that the number of mass-shooting has actually been stable for the past few decades. That doesn't excuse this, that doesn't mean it's okay, but be wary of people saying things are somehow worse than they ever were.

Regardless of anyone's stance on firearms, parents will be holding onto their children a little tighter tonight. For all parents on this forum, please take some time to reflect on your children.

As a new father, I've never felt so vulnerable. I frequently work in Newtown and the surrounding areas within Connecticut. The way of life is pretty calm throughout the state normally when compared to place I've been to. There's no surprise that an issue like this will affect the local residents for years.

Outside of the shooter's actions, I'm very appalled at the way some reporters were approaching families and children for a comment/statement. Not only was this unprofessional, but was very inhumane to the children that have just gone through a traumatic event.

My son is only 3 but my stepdaughter is in second grade. I can't even begin to imagine the feeling these people are going through, makes me sick to even have the thought of the pain I'd be feeling if it happened at my girls school.

What countries are doing better with more gun control?

Here's an interesting story that I would like to share. Back when the Iranian revolution happened, the leaders who took over made a law that citizens could not own guns anymore. All citizens would be allowed to bring their guns to local city centers to be confiscated by the police, with the notice that after 72 hours, police would inspect homes to make sure no guns were left behind. Any guns not turned in would result in a reasonable fine. The people, riding high on the euphoria of a quick and easy revolution, did as they were told, happily. Then the leaders turned out to be crazy bitches and the rest is history.

Peace Pledge

"I am a peace builder
I choose to show love, to give up speaking mean words
no notice the hurts I've caused, and make amends
to right wrongs, to help others
to find wise people as guides and friends
I will build peace at home, school, and in my community each day
I do better when I feel better"

Every day my elementary school students recite this pledge. I don't really know what to say other than this sort of massacre is my absolute worst fear. It makes me feel like there should be armed guards in every school, rather than having police mostly driving around giving speeding tickets. Whether or not that would be a good thing, I don't know, but what else can possibly prevent such things from happening. Gun control perhaps, but I doubt it. More therapy, psychoanalysis, and counseling? It wouldn't hurt. The roots of these issues need addressing: glorified violence, media attention, pharmaceutical drug prescriptions, mental illness, trauma grieving, etc. Respect for human life needs to be part of society again, but instead it's all about shitting on each other to get slightly ahead in the world. That's why my students learn the value of community, compassion, and peace-building.
