Bars, gyms, water parks, et al are currently closed down in Arizona. Businesses that cater toward groups cannot exceed 50 people and restaurants can allow dine-in however at only 50% capacity and must wear masks at all time they are away from their table eating. Some exemptions, most notably are the local casinos since they are on tribal land and are not bound legally by the state executive orders.

Christ, you'd think occupied indigenous people of the world would have a healthy fear of novel viruses by now.

I guess as an infected white person you could feel what it's like to be a Spanish Conquistador in the New World by entering one of those Casinos.

Two of the local Indian Nations (Navajo and Apache) have been hit extremely hard...the highest counts in the entire world. Their casinos are closed off and have curfews.

The situation in Sweden ICU:s has been improving since the peak in April when it was 500, now 35. The social distancing and work from home recommendations seems to be working.

Turns out the peak in April was 4-5 weeks after the February winter holidays when many Swedes travel abroad for skiing or other recreation. About 1 million Swedes (10M pop) traveled abroad during this period. This can explain why we had so many import cases compared to neighboring countries.

At work, we've returned to a "work at home as much as possible" approach. My daughter is slated to return to school the end of this month, M-F, 8am to 2pm. I give that less than a month before the gov closes it all down again.

Our schools didn't even make it to opening. Parents were so pissed when they announced actual in class learning that they made a big stink and the school system quickly changed to 100% at home learning, supposedly for the first 9 weeks.

Our school is a small, rural town. Only about 70-80 kids per grade, on average. Most of the parents here wanted their kids to go back...but I just have this gut feeling that isn't going to work.

When I see reference to low child infection and death rates as a reason to open schools, the subtext is, “It probably won’t be your kid.” But it will be someone’s.

Or, it will be the 57 year old cancer survivor, that teaches 3rd grade...or the janitor, or the grandparent an asymptomatic child lives with.

How many community members are we willing to sacrifice?

The acceptable number of preventable deaths is zero.

Working parents can go ahead and be mad. Be mad at the government for not handling this shit show properly, or mad that we don’t get BLI during the pandemic...don’t be mad at school staff that don’t want to die.

The infection control nurse who recently had coronavirus was finally allowed back to work this week and guess who I was lucky enough to get for my Covid-19 test this morning? Probably getting my last Hepatitis-B vaccination shot from her tomorrow too. It's totally safe and for great justice!

Well, it's true.

If you ask how many community members are we willing to sacrifice you have to recognise that we sacrifice lives for convenience every single day.

To say 'zero' is naive and unsustainable.

What convenience does COVID-19 provide us?

The same good arguments rear their ugly head once again!

Your 'preventable covid deaths' logic is facile, but honestly feel free to keep you and your family inside for the rest of time.

Ban heart disease, cancer, advanced aging, meth lab explosions, firearm violence etc...and covid" deaths would plummet drastically. Its just (actually no) catching up to last years flu seasons death toll here in MN. Did you ever wear a strap on file I on your head because of the flu?

I thought you were alarmist at first (and maybe you kind of still are) but as the months go by the more concerned I become. Significant numbers of people that recover have serious organ damage, even those who experienced mild symptoms. No one knows what the long term consequences of contracting this disease are.

I haven't left the house without a mask since March, initially out of an abundance of caution. Back then I kind of felt stupid and somewhat embarrassed since barely anyone was masking up at the time, at least locally. Now it's a fucking no brainer.
