This has been asked a few times but still it's tough to decide since lots of $$$$ will be involved. I got a JPN AES with a unibios. First cart is is the NeoSD Pro and it should be delivered tonight.

I know the artwork in general is nicer on the JPN boxes.


Anyway, what I am thinking to do is start buying the games I like to play at first, maybe 2 games a month. Some games like KOF98,Garou MOFTW, Windjammers, Soccer Brawl, Super S2 Those are some of them. But not sure if I should get the JPN or US Versions, for some titles its way cheaper for the JPN ones.

I don't think I am ever going to spend on games like Neo Turf or MS1.

Anyone has roms in higher priced games? Or is this a big no?

Any of you collect both? JPN&US

Do you like have for example Fatal F1 US and 2 in JPN?

Look i've been a member of this VIDEOGAME SITE! for a wihile I dont't know what I'm doing.
All I know I drive MY wife CRAZY with all of my video game collecions! Segas, Nitndo,NG, 2 MVSs, Ect.....IF THE home was on FIRE...I would take her...& leave all that stuff ro burn. She's that GOOD! I hope u & I Can be fellow gamers and have a good repor.. ILove MY NEO Geo.,,sd,,, sdf,sdf,s, d,fasdfas..but NOT weird kinda way.

I don’t really understand your question but that might be because I am retarded.

Anyone have roms in higher priced games? Wat? You can get all the roms you need online but no you probably won’t find them here as it keeps the place free from that sort of legal trouble. Try achieve.org or Reddit.

You can collect JPN, USA and EUR games and mix and match between them. There are no rules. Most people here are autistic so will only stick to one region to keep their gaming shelves uniform. I personally buy games often without boxes or manuals so I can run my balls all over them whenever I want. The bonus is box free games are cheaper.

I’d recommend checking out the technical forum here as well, it has lots of neo geo information such as what cum on an MVS board means.

Better question to ask yourself: What do you plan to DO with your games?
  • Do you want to actually play the carts you purchase?
  • Or will you be using your Neo SD to play and just collect carts as expensive shelf trophies?
  • Will spending $$$$ on a video game you will never touch or have any emotional attachment/nostalgia with bring you joy?
You already have an SD, so if your aim is just to play games on OG hardware, stick with that for now, play the library, then decide which games you'd like to spend money on and which variant. If you're new to SNK games and just discovering the library, don't rush it.

@Moob Butter sorry I meant conversions not roms. Like when they do an AES game from an MVS cart. And I meant for most people who collect do they buy those for really expensive titles like Neo Turf and Metal Slug/s or just stick to originals. Also any good sources for buying games other than here and the several FB groups? And a dumb question, are the box/case sizes for the JPN/US/EURO the same? Just thinking how they would look next to eachother on the shelf lol.

@yagamikun that is why I thought to get like one game a month or so and do it slowly. We always know that doesn't end well! I always wanted to own a few AES games since the early 90' so yes most likely I won't be playing them and will do most of the playing on the NeoSD Pro cart.

The chances of even finding one for sale is practically nil. Especially if you don't know anyone.

Yes, roms are still technically illegal of course but this is a 30 year old system. No one really cares anymore. You should be able to find a full neosd set on archive.org

Well Sandyballs I can tell you that a few members here (including me) do buy those MVS to AES conversions that pop on eBay or AliExpress from time but don't expect good cover art on them. I've owned a couple and the print quality of the inserts and labels on the cartridges are usually ass-tastic, but completely passable if you are only interested in playing the game. Since you have a NeoSD though - probably best work out what you like before you go heading into buying lots of games.

There's a ton of cheap affordable games to grab on the AES. Try the early Fatal Fury, Samurai Spirits or King of Fighter games - you can find those all for less than $100 each. Here's an example that not's eBay. https://www.emporiumretrogamingshop.com/products/samurai-spirits-snk-neogeo-aes-ng-1

Honestly just get a couple of cheap real games for lolz and play the rest on the NeoSD is the most sane thing to do. The even more sane thing to do would be sell it all and just play the games on a MiSTER, but you've got the console now so you might as well give it a try.

I own a Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. I get the more expensive games (E.g. Metal Slug) that I can on the Neo Geo CD and get conversions of other games I can't get on Neo Geo CD on the AES. This is a pretty retarded way to go about playing the Neo in 2024. Just emulate it if starting fresh in all honestly, the prices of Neo stuff since 2010 has gone silly.

First of all...

Second, if you're not going to actually play the games don't buy them, it makes it harder & more expensive for those of us that do.
Third, the roms are identical. Just get the one with the insert you like more.

Welcome aboard Mr. sanbol!

As a fellow noob, I just keep the focus on building a small collection of mainly 1990 and 1991 era games. That keeps the overall investment lower and more fun, IMO.
These are the true classics from the Neo Geo, and I don't care much for most of the KOF and SS games that came later (you have one or two and you should be good). You can emulate the rest if needed.

As long as you know what you're getting into, you'll be fine. I recommend getting at least one later snap case game. FF3, SS3 and KOF95 are usually pretty cheap. It's just a nice case and conveys that "premium" that the vinyl cases never did.

If you want some carts strictly just to look nice on a shelf, then go with the cheapest ones you can find. Or you could even go the cheater route of getting empty new shockboxes and printing custom inserts to emulate the look.

Otherwise it just sounds to me like you're wasting big money on real carts just to tickle the part of your brain that says "I own this".

There's still somewhat reasonable prices out there. A Japanese FF3 is $150-ish on ebay.

You shouldn't buy any games, you've got a NeoSD. You're not going to play them anymore than you would the NeoSD.

But you won't listen to that and will definitely buy games just to buy them and have shit on your shelf so...

Buy a handful of good but actually affordable Japanese games like:

SS2/3
FF2/S/3
AOF2
Real Bout
An early KOF
Maybe a sports game

Then stop collecting.

But I'm sure you'll do the opposite of that and buy a bunch of stupid overpriced and possibly fake shit, burnout and sell everything within a year.

When you guys say "MVS to AES conversions" are you talking about conversions from legit MVS rom chips, or just boots or repros made from burned chips? Because there's a huge difference. The real thing is more expensive and not commonly done anymore. Generally frowned upon.
