Whats the consensus? I may be looking to buy and want to see what is recommended

Are these Chinese consolized units with the AES shell any good? Whats video quality like?

Thanks

Here's a thread about that one you mentioned. Seems like mostly good impressions from guys who have it.

I bought one of their older units years ago, before they changed the shell. The seller was Time Harvest. And it's always worked fine. It's real neo boards in there. I think the component video started going out at one point, probably needs a resolder. But it has svideo and scart as well I believe. But honestly, I mostly just use the Fusion adapter in my AES nowadays if I want to play an MVS game.

Nah man, look up OpenMVS. Get yourself an MV1C, the OpenMVS kit and either 3D print your own case or have someone print one for you/buy one and off you go.

My comments about the Ali unit are in the linked thread, but the summary for me is that the unit is pretty decent, and the PSU is crap and should be replaced. It's worth noting that a couple of us have already had issues with the motherboard in the system, I had to replace mine. The replacement works well.

I like the OpenMVS kit for most people, only real issue is if you don't have a 3d printer that shell gets expensive to order online.

This can be an issue, yeah. I think Laserbear sells em for a price I wasn't keen on, though I cant seem to find it on their site anymore. In my case, I had a guy from a Neo group on facebook print one for me. It was a while back but I think it was $40 plus a couple bucks for shipping?

I already own the best custom MVS, but I do get curious about those AES style ones on Aliexpress, and I'm really tempted to buy one whenever I see them listed. I'm also really curious about the ones that have a vertical top-loading memory card slot on top just to see what the interface looks like inside. If anyone ever does buy one of those CMVSes, please open it up and share pics if you can.

+1 for OpenMVS. Video quality is exceptional.

Diggin that logo. The one from LaserBear has that weird "cog" logo on it and I wasn't a fan. But I was able to get the guy that printed by case to change it to just the "MVS" logo (without the multivideosystem at the bottom) and it looked better. But that looks sharp as hell. Imagine if the topcover was black? Even. Very cool design.

Does anyone sell an omvs that's pretty much assembled?
I'm too lazy to kit one together.

If you get the parts I'd put it together for free and then send it to you. I want to try one out to test but I already have 3 CMVS's and don't really need to buy another. I don't have a 3d printer so the shell would need to be provided.

Tempting... I'll seriously consider that.

Thanks everyone, contemplating, but Aliexpress is tempting, particularly because I know how to beef up the PSU

SPECIFICATIONS:
* NeoGeo MV-1C MVS motherboard originally manufactured by SNK. Play real arcade game cartridges (MVS), not home (AES) ones.

* VGA Video Output. At last, you can connect a NeoGeo to an HDTV the right way!!! Every HDTV has a VGA connector. This NeoGeo features an internal encoder with a dedicated CPU to process the low-resolution image and upscale it to high definition (can be upscaled up to 800x600, 1024x768 or 1366x768 pixels to fit with wide screen monitor or TV). Thanks to an OSD menu, you can choose between those resolutions and calibrate sharpness, brightness, contrast... The controls are located underneath.

NEW!!! Now the VGA video out features "Scanline Generator", which offers arcade monitor effect on Plasma TVs, LCD and HDTVs. Various controls allow you to change the scanline width, the image field that is affected and the line intensity for each color. Check the different examples on the Picture Gallery above.

* True RGB video output through SCART (also known as Peritel or Euroconnector). This is the clearest analog signal available (pure Red, Green and Blue color output) and almost every European TV has it. Rivals the Arcade Cabinet quality!

* Unibios 3.0. That's the most desired mod on a NeoGeo system:
allows to insert cheats in games (infinite lives, ammo, invincibility, enable sexy animations...). You can change between Arcade mode and Home mode, turning this MVS into a true home NeoGeo (remember you can only use arcade cartridges, not home ones).
Also allows to pause a game, region change and more stuff... This consolidated NeoGeo MVS features "Easy Unibios Swap" with external access. Eases future upgrade without opening the console.

* True stereo mod!. Normally, this arcade board would output a mono soundfield, but it has been upgraded with TRUE Stereo Sound at line level, both through the RCA (white & red) connectors and the Scart/Euroconnecor.

* Home platform controller ports (you can use any NeoGeo AES or CD controllers with this unit). It has the identical controller ports that are equipped on the home systems! Another option is to buy adapted controllers, sold very cheap on ebay.

* Battery modification: the console keeps the highest scores thanks to an internal battery. As time passes, the original rechargeable battery leaks acid and destroys the board. This one has been replaced by a standard coin cell battery, socketed and easily swappable from outside, without opening the console!

* Very reduced dimensions: 209 x 209 x 50 mm! Take a look at the picture on the wall comparing its size to a euro coin and a beverage can.

* Regulated Power Supply is included. Usually Jameco or MeanWell brands due to its Japanese high quality components.

* Subtle power led.

* Red/Green/Blue independent brightness control for both VGA out and SCART out.

I got one of the AES looking consolized MVS from Aliexpress back in November. They were running a sale for Black Friday and there was a coupon on top, so I got a really good deal on it. I think it was like $150 or so and then $40 for shipping. I'm happy with it.

Eh, those systems aren't really that great. The picture quality is rather dark and colors are washed out, which tells me the RGBS circuit is undervolted. Not to mention, the cheap regulator circuit in those systems seem to have a tendency of crapping out. It's a nice looking system, but needs work if it is going to be viable in the long run.

My advice would be to just invest in an OpenMVS build.
