While walking the dog this morning I was thinking about what I would like and is quasi-realistic (based on existing emulators and licensing) for the announcements on Tuesday. These are what I came up with:
  • Sega Collection 1 (all SMS)
    • Afterburner
    • Alex Kidd in Miracle World
    • Fantasy Zone
    • Golvellius: Valley of Doom
    • Kenseiden
    • Kung Fu Kid
    • Out Run
    • Phantasy Star
    • Shinobi
    • Sonic the Hedgehog
    • Wonder Boy
  • Sega Collection 2 (also all SMS)
    • Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
    • Fantasy Zone 2: The Tears of Opa Opa
    • Gain Ground
    • Golden Axe Warrior
    • Psycho Fox
    • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
    • Sonic Chaos
    • Vampire: Master of Darkness
    • Wonder Boy in Monster Land
    • Wonder Boy III
  • Konami Collection 1 (all NES)
    • Adventure Island
    • Bomberman
    • Castlevania
    • Contra
    • Double Dribble
    • Gradius
    • Milon's Secret Castle
    • Rush 'n Attack
    • Track & Field
    • Yie Ar Kung Fu
  • Konami Collection 2 (all NES)
    • Adventure Island II
    • Blades of Steel
    • Bomberman II
    • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
    • Kid Dracula
    • Life Force
    • Metal Gear
    • Stinger
    • Super C
    • Track & Field II
  • Konami Collection 3 (all NES)
    • Adventure Island 3
    • The Adventures of Bayou Billy
    • Bonk's Adventure
    • Castlevania III
    • Contra Force
    • Crisis Force
    • The Goonies II
    • Gradius II
    • Skate or Die
    • Snake's Revenge
Imagine all of that without even getting to the Genesis and SNES, let alone arcade stuff. I'd actually like to see the really ubiquitous stuff dropped, because I already have those in other places, but I realize they have to try to sell to the masses.

edit: Game Gear and Game Boy collections would also be a no brainer. Capcom would be the third best publisher of this time period, but they're a pretty distant third, especially once you remove licensed stuff.

edit2: The other big opportunity with the sunsetting of the PlayStation stores would be Konami's PS1 stuff: Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, etc.

The big Japanese publishers would be ideal but given the expiring Namco and Technos (Arc System Works) licenses I wouldn't expect much.

I expect more from Songbird (Atari Lynx Collection 3), Piko Interactive, and maybe Data East, Jaleco, or Atari.

If "some of these announcements are two years in the making" means more of the same, this guy should be a used car salesman. Of course, that doesn't mean you're wrong.

I'm sure there will be some new publishers on board, and maybe even a big one. I'm just saying that, so far, the big Japanese outfits have been the least enthusiastic.

If I had to pick one that might jump on board, I'd guess Taito. Square Enix owns them and they just had to sell off most of their Western studios for cash, so that might indicate they're going to be willing to license some stuff out on the cheap.

Taito might be a good call. Another one that would be cheaper than Sega or Konami that I would love to see is Natsume.

Activision used to license out their old stuff for Atari Flashback shit all the time before the Blizzard merger. Maybe now with Microsoft taking over they'd be willing to do so again and we could get Pitfall, Kaboom, River Raid, etc.

Also Midway doesn't seem too far out of reach. The Arcade 1up dudes were able to get them on board pretty early.

I'm pleasantly surprised... and relieved I didn't buy the OG handheld.

Now the critical question: black or white?

The cool part is that vert mode works with the already released games that used that format (eg the other arcade carts and some of the Lynx games).

Seems super overpriced.

It'd be 169 to order the white unit with both carts. Over 227 to get the black one, which means you're paying almost 60 bucks plus shipping for the case and the paper crap they give you.

Damn it, I thought it was 169 w/o a game. So I spurged and got the LE set for 224.

I'm paying $60 to make a profit when I sell it instead of taking a loss. If you're looking for thrifty thinking, you've come to the wrong site.

I gave the price difference more thought, and Funstock mentions, "bonus content to be announced September 2022!" I'll bet there is at least one more cartridge included that they aren't allowed to announce yet. Granted, paying in advance for something that might get announced and might actually be good is not the best decision, but see my prior post.
