Hey homie, because of you I played some Batman games for the Game Boy and GBC. I had played Return of the Joker in the 2000s but never finished it, the controls were just off. I remember the effects in the first sewer level were really amazing, though.
Batman - this is Sunsoft's game based on the movie. Oddly enough, when I was a kid I'd watch the first Batman movie like once or twice a month but I never played Sunsoft's Batman games. The first thing you notice about the game is Batman is hilariously tiny (even in comparison to enemies) and he's constantly pointing a gun. I'm surprised how good this is, and it's certainly the best portable Batman game ever made. Catchy music (one or two tunes wouldn't sound out of place in a Castlevania), necessary pixel-perfect platforming, and digitized Batkeaton. You can steamroll through this in like half an hour on your first try. I love the paunchy Jack Napier/Joker sprite as well. Paunchy!

Batman: The Animated Series - there are elements of Ninja Gaiden Shadow here with the grappling hook and wall jumping. The game could have been good, as it is it's not bad, but I wouldn't say it's good. A strictly average affair. The game has a surprisingly high challenge, and some neat ideas for boss fights, but I think the large size of the character sprites is detrimental to the gameplay. This is one area where games like Batman and Super Mario Land excel - due to the small character sprites, there's a lot more room to do things. The music consists almost entirely of the theme from the cartoon, but it's way too slow and makes you feel like you're trudging through the game. Again, good ideas here, and it's not a bad game, but if there was a better execution it could have easily been a Game Boy classic like Ninja Gaiden Shadow. I think the only part of the game that I thought was cool was when the Joker shoots down the Batplane before the last level, and then you can see the Batplane with smoke rising in the background when you begin the level.

All that said, cheers to BlackaneseNiNjA. Because of you I played these two. They were well worthwhile to play on the subway.
