Give any GB ROM a SGB border. Pretty cool! I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet.

Honestly, not as terrible as I was expecting. Definitely on the lower tier of the GB fighters totem pole, but better than quite a few I've played. Solidly mediocre.

Just found dis for the GBC

by Manfred Trenz

Wow! Thanks for posting this - never heard of it either.

Stage 1 was wild! Very cool. I was like, "Hey that's the graphics from Rendering Ranger!" then I realized who did this. The fact this was developed when the GBC was relevant is also crazy. This should've been made.

Edit: just sat down with this again to see how much is in the proto. It's a full damn game. Highly recommend. Starts out easy, gets pretty scrappy towards the end. I noticed it doesn't have a game over screen, just keeps respawning after you lose all your lives, so that sucks. But so damn impressive. The music is some of the best I've ever heard on the hardware. It's as if Future Crew made a game. I would happily fork over money if someone finished this and sold it.

Been playing this one a bit.

I never even heard of it until I was looking up a full list of DB games.

Seems that everyone who played it really likes it and you hardly see people mentioning it. For a GBC DBZ game it's quite unique and actually rather fun too.

This one was awesome. Up until DBZ Super Sonic Warriors (via Arc System Works) hit the gba, this was the coolest portable DBZ game since DBZ Goku Gekitouden on the original gameboy. Sank tons of hours into this one back in the day.

Dude, Supersonic is still one I go back to these days. It's a wonderful "upgrade" of sorts to Legends on Saturn/PS1. Extreme Butoden on 3DS by Arc is also quite good. Never did give Supersonic 2 on the DS a shot. Any good?

100% agree. SSW1 on gba and Butouden 3 (guilty pleasure lol) are the oldschool DBZ games I return to the most.

Super Sonic Warriors 2 on DS is great and definitely worth checking out if you’ve never given it a shot. It has a much larger roster, deeper combat, transformations, support characters, and way more modes to enjoy.

However, it also made enough changes to the mechanics of the game that make the overall combat feel a little slower than it’s predecessor. The fighting in SSW1 just feels faster and more frenetic, so I always tend to return to the original rather than the sequel as a personal preference. Let me know what you think if you check it out.

Extreme Butouden was badass (especially since that’s the first time I recall being able to play as SSGSS/Blue in a vs game). It was fun despite being completely busted, though these days it feels like an interesting prototype for DB FighterZ lol

Extreme Butouden doesn't get talked about a lot (probably because it's a handheld Fighter...), but that game is great and definitely feels like a precursor to DBZ FighterZ.

I'd actually take it over DBZ FighterZ any day since I'm not really into those hyper-chaotic Fighters and Butouden is paced more to my liking.

Trying to give MegaMan 5 a serious go. Goddamn it's hard...also I am old and have a short attention span. But jeebus.

Nice SGB color palette though.

I don’t think this one was mentioned in the thread yet, but Batman: The Animated Series on gameboy is yet another solid Konami gb game that tends to get overshadowed by the Batman movie game in discussions and lists.

While the movie game saw a release in other regions, the Batman title based on the animated series seems to have only hit shelves in North America. It’s a great little game with a solid rendition of the series theme as its main ost. The gameplay feels somewhat similar to the nes Batman movie game with large stages to explore for batarang refills in addition to a wall-jump and the ability to use the bat-grapple in a manner reminiscent of Ninja Gaiden Shadow. After the initial level, latter stages feature segments that switch between Batman and Robin as separate playable characters.

If you dig the konami TMNT gb games, this one is worth a look as well imho:

Whats up pixeljunkie, since you enjoy Batman TAS, have you also tried Batman Chaos in Gotham on gbc? I thought it was another surprisingly solid batman game on the system back then with surprisingly fluid animation similar to the sprites seen in the Adventures of Batman & Robin on snes.

Batman Game Boy post
Hey homie, because of you I played some Batman games for the Game Boy and GBC. I had played Return of the Joker in the 2000s but never finished it, the controls were just off. I remember the effects in the first sewer level were really amazing, though.

Batman - this is Sunsoft's game based on the movie. Oddly enough, when I was a kid I'd watch the first Batman movie like once or twice a month but I never played Sunsoft's Batman games. The first thing you notice about the game is Batman is hilariously tiny (even in comparison to enemies) and he's constantly pointing a gun. I'm surprised how good this is, and it's certainly the best portable Batman game ever made. Catchy music (one or two tunes wouldn't sound out of place in a Castlevania), necessary pixel-perfect platforming, and digitized Batkeaton. You can steamroll through this in like half an hour on your first try. I love the paunchy Jack Napier/Joker sprite as well. Paunchy!

BATMIDGET.jpg

Batman: The Animated Series - there are elements of Ninja Gaiden Shadow here with the grappling hook and wall jumping. The game could have been good, as it is it's not bad, but I wouldn't say it's good. A strictly average affair. The game has a surprisingly high challenge, and some neat ideas for boss fights, but I think the large size of the character sprites is detrimental to the gameplay. This is one area where games like Batman and Super Mario Land excel - due to the small character sprites, there's a lot more room to do things. The music consists almost entirely of the theme from the cartoon, but it's way too slow and makes you feel like you're trudging through the game. Again, good ideas here, and it's not a bad game, but if there was a better execution it could have easily been a Game Boy classic like Ninja Gaiden Shadow. I think the only part of the game that I thought was cool was when the Joker shoots down the Batplane before the last level, and then you can see the Batplane with smoke rising in the background when you begin the level.

All that said, cheers to BlackaneseNiNjA. Because of you I played these two. They were well worthwhile to play on the subway.

edit: this is a fair and well-written review for Batman TAS: https://ettugamer.com/2016/10/02/a-...story-in-15-games-batman-the-animated-series/

Whats up LS! I’m glad you checked them out. Though neither is on the level of the nes Batman movie game, they were interesting gameboy adaptations of the license and I agree with your takes on both titles.

I also agree that the gb Batman Animated Series game could have been standout had it made just a few changes to the design. It was an interesting and challenging Konami gb title released exclusively here in the states that seems to share a lot of dna with the gameboy TMNT trilogy and even Zen the Intergalactic Ninja. I’m glad you gave em a shot :buttrock:

This was a really good review; thanks for sharing this.

This excerpt from the review nails my thoughts on Batman TAS as a gb title:

“Batman: The Animated Series is one of the starkest examples of a hidden gem in plain sight. It stands out as an obvious title in the library because of its license, yet talk about it is rare beyond the evaluation that it either does or doesn’t do the brand justice. It deserves much more than simply being relegated to that, however, as its craft is far beyond that of its peers.”

It's price reflects the fact it's not as "unknown" as we'd think though. Pretty 'spenzive title

Thanks for the reco @BlackaneseNiNjA gonna dive into this later today
