Look I can actually speak for Hotel Mario, I'm one of the few who actually had a CDi back in the day and sought that out and Link Faces of Evil. Despite the hipster douche magnetism of calling them total unredeemable shit for cool points, they're not bad. They're NOT 1st party Nintendo quality too to be fair. Hotel Mario is this weird bastard hybridization of Elevator Action, Mario Bros, and visuals/sfx more in line with the Super Nintendo. It's actually pretty fun, and yes the video online are true the animations and vocals are embarrassing to watch but so bad they're good, sort of like a rubber monster movie from Japan. Since I brought it up Link Faces of Evil is much like Zelda 2 without the active overworld and it plays at a slightly slower pace. It does annoyingly restart the audio if you pop into another screen since the memory isn't there on the CDi to keep it going so the restarts are jarring, and yes the video on this is worse than the Hotel Mario bits. It's not easy, but it is fair, if you blow it, it is your fault. Both games in their own style are pretty well drawn and the controls work fine. They're actually some of the better CDi games in their own genres.
As far as actually poor Mario games, yeah they exist, but they tend to be the farmed out crap like their handed off sports titles. I know it won't be popular but I'd also throw Super Luigi U in there, you have to be a person in love with speed runs and not exploring to get into that with the 100 (mario) second clock or you die in every stages. I find that game wholly unfun in ever respect. I put it down after a couple worlds and sold it. Super Mario Bros 2 FDS (Japan) also fairly well sucks, it's a masters challenge game, not a real 'mario game' persay as they sold it for masters of the old wanting more of the same. It's fun and not fun in the same light because of that. I've finished it before, not hte added A-D worlds, but I've never compelled myself to do it twice as I don't like the design changes and fuck that poison mushroom too. It just seemed like a lazy game with minimal upgrades visually of just more of the same, it was like the EA Madden regurgitation of Mario. Mario Party, any of those though are fucking awful unless you play them with all 4 people as humans. The AI is a goddamned horrible cheat. You can beat the hell out of the game the entire board, then around the last move or two it will throw more often than not some cheap smack to your face and take away your points or throw you back the board so the AI will win no matter how bad you were kicking its ass. That's not a game, it's an insult. Wasted my money on the first one, hated the others I've found over time since as I'd try them to see if they got better (and have not.)
I'm not going to pick on the educational games though, they do a good job for the target audience, kids and learning, not actual gaming. As games they're not good, but as a tool they are.
