No matter how much hype the Metal Slug series gets, I still think it's underrated.

I feel exactly opposite, oddly. Slug 1 is far and away the best game in the series and it goes downhill incredibly fast from there. By the time Slug 6 and all the others came out, I was practically braindead to the series.

I love MS 1 the most but 2 , X and 3 are still a blast to play.

Even 4 and 5 aren’t as bad as I remembered when I replayed then last year.

6 is still a massive turd through.

All the main, non-3D/mobile/casino games are at least good. Yeah they wont convince anyone isn’t already a fan and lots of stuff is reused…but I’d still rather play MS4 than many other NG games including some highly regarded ones.

1,2,X,3 are truly classics imo
4,5,6,7,XX, Advance, Mission 1/2 scratch the itch but just aren’t as inspired

I agree although if 2 didn't have the slowdown problem I'd have a hard time deciding between the two. Both are tight, well thought out and very fun games. X on it just all goes downhill.

4 is garbage. I said what I said! (but really that video kinda says it's a travesty of a game)

Well hate to disagree with Mr Big Youtuber but there you go lol.

4 is like a reheated meal slightly past its best. But is it still fun to play? Yeah, so I couldn’t call it garbage.

4 is the microwaved steak to 1/2/X/3’s sirloin/ribeye/double thick ribeye/prime rib

Nah 4 is still fun. I’m just playing around. But it’s still the worst of the OG series

1 and 2 are both great and while the “turbo” patch for 2 isn’t perfect, it does help a lot with the slowdown.

MS3 is one of those games I want to like more than I do, but it’s a big step backward in level and boss design. People say it’s too long but that’s only part of the problem. The monotony and slow pacing makes it feel even longer than it is. 1 and 2 on the other hand do not have this problem. After playing the first 3 enough to learn the patterns and work out a strategy to clear them, 3 was the only one where it stopped being fun after the first couple playthroughs. Hard to overlook the design issues when you're playing it over and over again and the novelty factor is gone. On the upside it does have great artwork, one of the best soundtracks and it’s a great game to play with a friend if you’re just messing around.

3 has the looks but the game sucks. It was a last hurrah to it's detriment. It's overstuffed. It gets repetitive and boring. The first enemy you see, the very first one, is a fucking crab. A crab that takes 3 shots to kill. Doesn't really lend itself to the 'run' part of run 'n gun. In fact, the ONLY enemy you see up until the first path split is the crab. It just sets a weird tone. The whole game is sluggish. The final mission takes longer than the entirety of Slug 1.

4 has the game but looks like shit. A return of the glorious grunts. A creative scoring system with the medals. A few cool new Slugs. Just enough zombies/pirates/whatever else that isn't armor or infantry from Morden's Army that it feels more like 2 than anything else in the series (X does not exist). Yes it reuses a bunch of assets from previous games. I don't care.

I'll die on this hill.

4 sucks but sucks a bit less if you play it the right way.

5 could have been quite a bit better if they had actually finished it and even what we got could have been cleaned up and arranged a bit more cohesively. There's some really cool stuff in it or at least potentially cool stuff.

Is the opinion shifted that 4 is better than 5? For a long time 4 was really hated

Having played through Metal Slug 3 again the other day, I can say with confidence there's only one truly bad part of the game, it's during the Final Mission, the vertical scrolling section after flying through space and entering the mothership but before you are walking on foot again. That super fast scrolling vertical section in the mothership sucks ass. It is so hard on the eyes and probably gives most people motion sickness, the scrolling is just too fast. I always get a bit of a headache and sore eyes after having to sit through it. Everything else in Metal Slug 3 is fine, it doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

The Metal Slug that I do think deserves more hate is Metal Slug X. Literally the only thing it improves over MS2 is the slowdown. Every single other change, big and small, is for the worse. In every mission, there are many additions of bullet sponge enemies in place of single shot ones. All the level color palette changes look worse, many bosses were lazily recycled from Metal Slug 1 just to pad out the play time and the most heinous offense was the inclusion of Mars People enemies in Mission 4. Way to throw in a massive spoiler mid-way through the game, assholes.
