I appreciate the desire to acknowledge outstanding achievement in your field but the televised award shows are just masturbatory. The horse trading, the ugly commercialism, the self-righteous stump speeches... it's all just another performance. No one should care.

I saw Joaquin's acceptance speech and was wondering what he was on. I think if I was a teenager I would've been moved but it was a bit too much.

Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)

It's like life, man. Driving. Racing. Gapping spark-plugs. Girls. Well, not so much girls. A girl, but she got in the way. Driving. Racing, to where? Nowhere man. Nowhere. Racing to our own Oblivion cause that's it. The end.

Not a whole lot of a plot here, little dialogue and zero character development. This is a strange movie. It exists in its own reality, with an aimless pace, numerous moments of pure idleness and the repetitive purr and noise of engines.

I guess you either have to be really into cars and/or 70's counter-culture philosophy, or some such. It put me to sleep.

On the plus side, the LaserDisc version of this movie which was together with a bunch of other lasers that I picked up recently, has a little bit of value to it, as far as I know.

My Dad owned that car. It was a beast. Plus it has Simon and Gafunkle. Double plus he also owned an El Camino SS.

Took my nephew to watch the Sonic the hedgehog movie and I can say the film is alright. Jim Carrey is still funny.

If you got kids you should take em it's a fun film for kids.

While I was recovering from surgery a couple of weeks ago, I decided to revisit The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition, all three films, in 2 hour blocks.

I must say that I think I like them more now than Indid almost 2 decades ago.

Jesus Fucking Christ, it's really been almost 20 years since Fellowship came out.

Probably the most perfect casting for a film adaptation ever. Sir Ian McKellan as Gandalf almost feels like was born just to play that role. Elijah Wood and Sean Astin are perfect as Frodo and Sam. Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn has grown on me to the point where I really think he perfectly reprised the character for a film version. Christopher Lee IS Saruman as far as I'm concerned. And Andy Serkis changed the industry with his performance as Gollum.

It also helps that the actors were so invested. When Frodo wakes up in Rivendell, McKellan was telling Astin to make sure he takes Wood's hand into his own as they begin to talk because 'fans will be watching for that from the books.'

The appendices are incredible to watch. I will say that we need a new BD transfer, though. There is a little bit of grain on the EE gold box collection.

Doing a rewatch of films this weekend, which included:

Snowpiercer: Still love this film and I think it's one of the best of the 2010s. Great pacing and intensity, and Chris Evans was fantastic. Bong is such a master.

Contagion: Given how worried the wife and I are for family in China, we decided to make ourselves feel worse by watching Contagion. Good film overall but feels very very close to home right now. Jude Law's character is also a total asshat.

The Dead don't Die: Not a bad film at all. Very mellow way to do a zombie flick and it worked. Loved the song too.

Sonic the Hedgehog, was fun. Kids loved it, I liked it. Not IMAX worthy or anything, but definitely worth burning a few gift cards for.

To think Sonic 2007 was ridiculed for taking place in the human world (a bizarre scenario I personally found strangely endearing).
2020 is a sidequest

Apples and oranges, though, from what I can tell. The movie is a fish out of water story, no? 2007 was just Sonic getting thirsty for humans.

+1
Saw it with the wife and kid and we all enjoyed the movie. Surprisingly, my kid loved this way more than Detective Pikachu lol

Took my daughter to Sonic this weekend, and I was surprised by how not awful it was. Daughter loved it, and Jim Carrey was top notch! Also watched JoJo Rabbit and fucking loved it! Taika makes good fucking movies.

Knives Out - Daniel Craig pretty much single-handedly saved this from being a total letdown for me. Still wildly overrated though. What a waste of most of the ridiculously loaded cast.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this was a waste of time and great actors. The outsized praise it's been getting was downright baffling.

KO reminded me a lot of Joker, in that both are bad yet clearly very taken with themselves, and each features a lead performance that was bizarre enough to make me keep watching.

That Southern accent, holy shit Daniel Craig.

Saw The Gentlemen last night - meh

Fun flick, good actors..but Guy Ritchie is stuck in the late 90's pretending he's on the level of Tarantino. The whole time i was imagining if the same movie had been written/directed by S Craig Zahler and how amazing that would've been lol

The Invisible Man. Local Aussie Leigh Whannell re-invents the classic story with the heart and spirit of someone who knows horror. It is immediate tension. Elisabeth Moss owns the film and is probably my favourite female actor, it’s a pitty she’s a stupid scientologist. Awesome shots of my stomping ground in the Illawarra - best place on Earth. 4/5

He wrote Saw, mate. He’s been on a roll for years.

I meant as a director. Saw was a revelation in 2004 and I've followed Whannell's career since then. His analysis as a kid in that clip is pretty much spot on.
