New Doom/Doom II update launches, including 16 new official maps

Id software has released a new version of classic Doom. If you already own Doom on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Playstation, Xbox, or Switch you can download the new listing for free, otherwise it's 10 dollars. Also on GamePass.

Features:
-The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, The Master Levels for Doom II, No Rest for The Living, Sigil, Final Doom's TNT Evilution and the Plutonia Experiment, and the brand new Doom 1 expansion Legacy of Rust rolled into one package
-Legacy of Rust includes brand new enemies and weapons, 2 8-map episodes for Doom 1
-frame rates up to 120 FPS on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. 60 on Switch, PS4, Xbox One. Native 1080p and 16:9.
-developed by id, Machine Games, and Atari's Nightdive Studios
-original soundtrack as well as the arranged, instrumental versions of the classic songs
-online and local co-op
-16 player online deathmatch with cross platform multiplayer
-local split screen (4 players on console, up to 8 PC and Xbox Series)
-25 brand new deathmatch maps plus the original 18

I've been playing it since it dropped, it's pretty great. It's not going to be that big of a deal for PC users who have already been using gzDoom and such for years already, but it's a big upgrade for the console versions, and even on PC it makes playing an updated version much easier without installing various mods separately.

It also supports cross play, I stayed up entirely too long last night running through Doom 2 co op with some friends, and we were all on different platforms.

The remixed music is also pretty good for the most part. It doesn't hit 100% of the time, but for the most part it sounds right compared to the original tunes while being higher quality. Original midi and FM music is also available, and if you dig into the mods section you can download the Metal Music pack which works on games with supported tracks.

I think even for PC people it's going to be a good thing because you have to mix and match sourceports to get all the features of this new version. I'm mostly a GZDoom guy but that doesn't support split screen, for instance.

All this. Been enjoying it the last couple days as well. Love the ability to switch soundtracks as well - between Remix, Midi, and FM Synth. Each one has their own flavor. Kind of like the 4 soundtracks that come on Castlevania Chronicles for PS1.

Dope, thanks for the heads up. I actually own Doom on Steam. Pretty fun on Steam Deck, definitely looking forward to this.

I dont know if its just my steam deck, but can you actually control Doom well with the analog sticks? I swear mine are inaccurate as hell it feels like.

I've been playing on PC with an Xbox controller and it works great! Sacrilege I know, but I've always preferred a controller over KB&M.

I've had no issues, but did turn the sensitivity down about 10%.

I fired doom 2 up for the first time since the update patch and they have MAJORLY improved the controls when using a steamdeck. Before this i was having to use a user submitted control layout. It plays fantastic now. I wish it had more than just map packs to download in the addons section, but hey im not gonna complain. This is great to now have perfect doom and doom 2 ports in portable form. Makes me actually consider getting a steamdeck dock for the first time ever.

Nice that they included Sigil. Been wanting to play that. Now I need to figure out how to get this on my Win 98SE machine.

The sensitivity in the prior ports was not great. It wasn't just a Steam Deck thing, the console ports were the same. I could get it playable but it never really felt right. I've mostly been playing with KB+M, but when I played the Switch version of the update the controls felt much better.

There's a neat mod for Doom 2 that is compatible with the version included in the collection. It's a fully path-traced version of Doom 2. If you have a fast enough PC rig and a card capable of Ray Tracing, it's a sight to behold as a tech demo. I far prefer the OG, but neat none the less.

They should include Doom 3 in the collection (but only if they fix it- torch gaffer-taped to all weapons, remove the weapons storage lockers (or give the player all the numbers to open them, without having to dig into your PDA), and make it so the enemies don't disappear when you kill them). These changes would make it more like Doom & Doom II.

I dropped the $10 and played through the 1st episode of Doom 1 for the first time in 25+ years in one sitting. Weird that I don't remember people's birthdays and what not but I can remember 90% of the secrets from thatfirst episode. Don't know how much more I'll play but that was a good couple of hours of nostalgia.

Sigil 2 is one of the mods you can download for Doom 1 in the in-game browser, so be sure to grab that if you haven't. Sigil and Sigil 2 are both John Romero developed.

All the stuff on the main menu, but so far none of the stuff from the mod menu. So Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, both episodes of Final Doom, The Master Levels for Doom II, Sigil, No Rest For the Living, and Legacy of Rust.

Thanks, i am dumb. I made my younger friend download it on gamepass lol. I think he has played Doom: Eternal. But he’s a sport and we’ll play anything co-op.

Descriptions of the new enemies and weapons in Legacy of Rust:
Spoiler:

Banshee - Based on an unused enemy somewhat similar to The Blob, explodes when slain or upon entering contact with the player. It has 100 hit points.
Ghoul - Based on an early lost soul design. Flies around and shoots fast projectiles that deal 3-24 damage. It has 50 hit points.
Shocktrooper - Based on the player's sprites. Fires a plasma gun at a fast rate. It has 100 hit points.
Mindweaver - Based on an early version of the arachnotron with a super chaingun, functions as a weaker version of the spiderdemon. It has 500 hit points.
Vassago - A large charred-black demon with wings. It throws fireballs that burn for a few seconds after impact. It has 1000 hit points.
Tyrant - A cyberdemon with green wires and no horns. It has 1000 hit points.

Incinerator - based on an early plasma rifle design
Calamity blade - an unused weapon from the early design days


Cool that a lot of it is based on unused or earlier versions of the monsters that made it into the original game.

In all there are six new enemies and two weapons. This is the first time new weapons and enemies have been included in an official Doom or Doom II wad since Doom II added 8 monsters and the super shotgun. The Sigil games are all Doom 1 as far as weapons and enemies while Final Doom, No Rest for the Living, and Master Levels are all Doom II.
