PS2 BC is a good thing.

PS2 only has one of the biggest, more varied, best libraries of any console, ever, so I'm surprised Sony has not done more to make it some kind of an option.

They really dropped the ball by not at least giving people the option to pay for a module in the past (now that no new PS3 offers BC).

The slim should have included a bay/port that allowed for a PS2 EE/GS chip to be attached.

What do those chips cost Sony anyways? They're both custom chips that Sony owns the patents for. The design has been made cheaper over the last 10 years. Ken Kutaragi probably has a case or two in his garage.

BC should have never been removed from the PS3.

Sony was making a profit on the PS2 during the PS3's launch. They were losing money on the PS3, so from a marketing standpoint it made perfect sense to sell more of the console that brought in money vs including BC as a feature in one that's not only struggling to sell in the first place but actually costs them money for each unit sold.

Now the PS3's caught up, and everyone wants BC. It is a great feature, I personally wouldn't mind owning a PS2 if it had HDMI and wireless controllers, but my triples are 60Gigs anyway so I'm good.

I purchased a slim last year, would love to make it PS2 compatible so I don't have to swap cables.

There are a handful of games I'd like to play on the PS2, and I'd love to do so without having to buy/hookup a whole new system that will likely just collect dust 99% of the time. If they make this thing, and it's not horribly priced, I'd consider picking it up. I mean, really, I want to play stuff like Parappa 2 and etc that probably isn't even worth the hassle, but I'd get it for shits and giggles.

main thing i use my ps3 for is upscaling ps2 games (also i've noticed a lot of times games look better if you only set them to 480p and let your tv do the rest. using the ps3 to scale to 720p/1080i/p looks way blurrier.)

an addon for the slim is cool but i wonder what itll cost in the end. might as well get a 20/60gig instead.

I didn't even know they sold media HUBS for the slim that adds media slots/USB until a few days ago. Target had them.

This would be cool to be able to play PS2 games again. Now if they could only make it to where you could play any region PS2 game!

I want a universal PS3 that plays all region PS3 and PS2 games. I was really excited when they announced that Japanese PS3 games would work on an American system, but we're pretty much getting every game released here in America anyway. I would love to have the BC put back in and be able to play my Japanese PS2 games without the need of a swap disk.

$10 says it will still be cheaper just to buy a used PS2. I have both. I don't see what the big deal is. Is it really that inconvenient to swap discs or switch from HDMI1 to VIDEO2?

I've got a satellite receiver, stereo receiver, Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 already sitting under my TV. Not really one for stacking barely used electronics under there. The Wii is bad enough as is. I just put away my PSOne (the tiny last rev) as it really got used like twice for playing Um Jammer Lammy and that's about it. No desire for tons of crap clogging up the living room.

Are people forgetting that playing PS2 games on a PS3 is extremely convenient?

Wireless Dual Shocks? Unlimited Free Memory Cards?

I don't know if I could go back to using a PS2 to play PS2 games.

This is really great news. I had a 60gig system, but it got the YLOD and instead of fixing it through Sony, I sold the broken system and got a 120gig slim. I missed the BC of the 60gig, but it looks like they might come out with a EE chip in a USB stick. I always thought they should do something like this so they wouldn't have to put a EE chip in every PS3, but the people that want BC could pay a little extra for it.

Put me in the camp of people that would rather have one system under their TV instead of two.

I'm pretty positive once Sony gets the big HD re-releases out, and the money slows down, they will release a firmware with BC.
IMO, this patent is for stopping 3rd parties from releasing their own BC gadget.

From what I've read, it is extremely tricky to emulate the GS because of it's bandwidth, which is actually greater than the RSX's.

Strange, isn't it?

The PS3 can only emulate the EE, which is why the UK (and 80GB) units came with only the GS chip.

:lolz: So let me get this straight. Sony sells a machine that plays PS2 games. Then they take that feature out. Now they want you to pay to get that feature back?

Yea, I was disappointed by this also. I thought we were going to get some great imports, but instead we got nothing major. The only ps3 game I imported was Initial D. Can't understand whats going on, but the racing is pretty cool.

I don't like all the clutter either. I Got a small entertainment center in the game room with a xbox360 elite and ps3. On the floor underneath the ec got the cable box, modded xbox, and modded ps2. Next to the t.v stand I have the wii. The wii is the only system that clashes with the ec because its white and sticks out like a sore thumb. Would buy a black one, but will lose all the crap I downloaded from the white one if I decide to sell it and I don't need two wii's lying around, I hardly play this one.

The wife doesn't let me keep shit in the living room. It was hard persuading her to let me slap some stand up speakers and stereo receiver in there.

My ps2 is only around for imports and *ahem* backups. Depending on how this works i may get one even though i have a BC PS3 (but its the software emulation kind, the 80 gig so its sketchy).
Agreed on killing clutter for a tv, hence why my SNES, GCN, and N64 all share AV cables.

The PS2 is on the CRT and the PS3 is on the LCD. No swapping needed.

I hook up my old systems when I need them. I'm a play-things-on-their-original-platform person, but it is still nice to have the option, especially for upscaling, providing the game plays the way intended. I'll admit backwards compatibility is convenient for, say... living away from home.

That would be nice ... but I wouldn't want to re-buy my ps2 collection.
Exactly. The whole point with buying movies or games is that you don't buy a DVD with data on it, you mainly pay for the right to use the content in your home. But still, each time something is re-released on a different platform, customers have to pay again the full price.
If Sony was consistent, they would let me download my old PSX and PS2 games to my PS3 if I can prove that I own the original...

Great revenue model, isn't it? But at least, when they removed PS2 compatibility, they gave us 20GB of additional hdd space. ;)

I've thought about ditching my 60gb PS3 before something strikes and upgrading to a slim, but I'm another one of those people who likes to have as few systems/tech pieces out as possible.

This external piece would be pretty tight, but only if they don't force you to rebuy all of the PS2 games on PSN for $10-15 a pop. Which for the majority of the games will definitely be more than they command on the used PS2 market.
