Hey so it's that time of the month to pick the next game for SOTM. Here are my picks:
1. Harmful Park (PSX, Jpn PSN) - One of my favorite parody kind of shooting games. I find myself playing it over the Parodius games (not to take anything away from those). As far as I know it was only released on the PS1 and the physical disc is expensive, but between ODEs and emulation you should be able to find a way to play it. It's also on the Japanese PSN if you want to go through the process of playing it that way. This is definitely the roker pick™.
2. Ibara (PS2, arcade, MAME) - The toughest shmup I've ever played that isn't broken. It's one of those games that no matter how much you think you've "mastered" it, you'll still probably lose a life randomly on the first stage and get unreasonably pissed. Not too many options to play this one, it's either the PS2 or arcade (MAME).
3. Gate of Thunder (PCE CD, Wii, PSN, Switch, Xbox?) - Available pretty much everywhere, this horizontal shooter is balanced and accessible and fun. The graphics and music still hold up, imo. One of the finest for the PC Engine CD.
4. Sylphia (PCE CD) - Old school shooter but with a surprisingly more modern presentation. This one is rarely talked about but I always liked it. It would be nice to do a deeper dive. Developed by Tonkinhouse and Compile (uncredited). Never re-released but with emulation being so accessible for the PC Engine CD, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a way to play it.
Note: None of these have ever been a SOTM. In the event of a tie, I will decide the winner. You can change your vote if need be. Poll closes on May 31 around 12:30 am EST.
