SVC's greatest failure is how depressing it is

I would never have expected SNK to cancel Kyo like this.
Terry is in Smash and SF6. It absolutely makes sense to lean on him and use him as much as possible. SNK is a corporation after profits. Lore, history and long time fans are not the main consideration.

I would never have expected SNK to cancel Kyo like this. Pretty silly too, since in game the intro is all about Kyo vs Ryu and char selection screen puts p1 on Kyo and p2 on Ryu as the default picks. I only hope their Terry obsession will stop after releasing Garou Densetsu City of the wolves.

The old japanese home ps2 release of svc removed Kyo as well and featured new art of Terry vs Ken, so this isn’t particularly new or drastic for promoting this game:

Glad to see it return :buttrock: Waiting on the Capcom vs SNK collection next.

I like that cover more, and I have that copy of the game besides.

I have a feeling we're about to get some more big announcements. CvS Collection announcement would make my year.

Could Capcom Vs SNK 3 be announced soon? Man, what a world it would be.

How much of this game was completed before the Aruze deal? Because if the answer is “none” it makes a lot of sense. Playmore was always a pale imitation, the NGPC iteration blows this Chaos out of the water, too

I always saw that cover as an alternative take. In fact it shows Ken and Terry, not Ryu and Kyo. I mean it is a different pairing altogether. This time they're just canceling my poor Kusanagi Kyo.

Ive read somewhere (here, maybe? A-P?) that the crossovers we're seeing in SF6 with Terry and Mai could be indicative of a new partnership between SNK and Capcom which could end up in SvC3.

Honestly I would love to see a new SNK Vs Capcom with SF6's engine. Im not good by any stretch of the imagination, but Ive found the system somewhat enjoyable.

Or - maybe the KOF15 engine.

KoF XV is running on unreal so it's not particularly "unique".

sf6 devs have openly stated in multiple interviews that they are VERY willing to work on new vs games. Namely with Marvel and SNK. Usually it means that there are plans already underway

Hey whats up! If you view Falcoon’s japanese home release art as a variant, then there’s no reason why the art for this release can’t be viewed as the same.

There is definitely precedent for Terry being the chosen mascot character as the face of SNK even well after the introduction of Kyo (who is also one of my favorite characters of all time). Terry represented the SNK brand as a whole even for japan-only products even in the late era of the original incarnation of pre-Playmore SNK.

The releases of SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters’ Clash, along with the japan exclusive release of SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters’ 2, reinforced Terry as the representative mascot for SNK as a whole up until the post-Aruze bankruptcy. Notice Kyo’s presence as just another background character of the SNK version of the first Card Fighters’ title below and his outright absence on the cover of the japanese exclusive sequel cover below that leaves Terry Bogard and Ryu as the sole respective brand mascots below:

It is also noteworthy that Card Fighters’ Clash was the start of the SNK vs Capcom series and branding to begin with, and if anything, Kyo usurped Terry (as the originally established brand mascot as seen above for the SNK vs Capcom series) rather than the other way around.

speaking of - what happened to him? Met him for a German gaming news site back in 2006 for an interview at SNK HQ - but after that it seems he fell from grace

Whats up Yamazaki! Though far from his previously prominent art director and character design roles from those years, he was still doing illustrations for SNK in addition to other projects last I checked. He’s still active on X/twitter too:

Hey man:)! Thanks for your reply first of all. You are right, there are some precedents and It is my bad for not taking into account the Card Fighters games. However, in those cases Kyo is at the very least present on the cover. If you then go and check Match of the Millennium , the character that stands besides Ryu is Kyo, not Terry which is behind Kyo.
I really don't like that they simply erased Kyo from the new SVC promo artwork.
Do they want to push Terry again instead of Kyo? I understand even If i do not agree with that...but please at least keep Kyo on the cover.
Moreover, I think it will be much more weird when people boot the game up and notice that Terry is not featured in the intro. To me, the sudden change on the artwork for SVCC was a mistake.
I understand your point and again, thank you for brining up facts about older vs games (even if those are card games).

All joking aside, I agree that Kyo deserves a place in the marketing. Terry, Ryo, Haohmaru and Kyo should all always be represented in the marketing. For SvC Chaos the marketing should reflect the product but Terry is the top dog and, plain and simple, that is why they're doing this. He's the guy. Once Sakurai chose him for Smash, and once SNK agreed to it, the message was clear.

SNK is in a place now where they obviously want to benefit from the rub of more successful companies. Those companies don't see Kyo as 'the guy' anymore (and it's doubtful they ever did). SNK is rolling with that. Maybe the first smart thing they've done in a long time.
