I’m a Native Son of the Golden West.

I lived in Missouri 1995-2009.

Junior High through a couple years after college.

@LoneSage, you falter in your role as Keeper of the Canon.
Bro, no, it's not like that. It's like that moment in Justice League Unlimited, in the two parter episode where they travel to the future and time is unraveling and the John Stewart Green Lantern turns into Hal Jordan Green Lantern but then Hal says, "I'm up to speed."

Duf, I'm up to speed.

It runs on AA batteries.

The ability to control the sub vs a few extra hours to play Tetris. Choose wisely.
Tetris was a bad example to use here, it really opens the question up to debate

New version of YELLOW SUBMARINE:

In the land where I was born
Lived a man who never sailed under the sea
And he told us of safety
In the land of submarines
So we dropped in to the depths
'Til we heard a little crack
And we died beneath the waves
In our homemade submarine

We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine
We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine

And our friends are all on shore
Many more are safe because they are poor
As the Titanic band begins to play

You all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine
You all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine

Full steam ahead, Mister Rush, full steam ahead
Full steam ahead it is
(Drop the controller, drop the controller)
Aye-aye, sir, aye-aye
Captain, captain
As we live a life of ease (a life of ease)
Every one of us (every one of us)
Has all we need (has all we need)
Sky of blue (sky of blue)
And sea of green (sea of green)
In our homemade (in our homemade)
Submarine (submarine, aha)

We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine
We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine
We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine
We all died in a homemade submarine
In a homemade submarine, in a homemade submarine

I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to this story because…well, once they lost contact it was obvious they were gone. The constant ghoulish media coverage was disgusting.

However the other day I was reading something in bed at 3:00am for some reason and I ran across the creator of those blue people movies, Jesus Christ himself mentioning that the sub was carbon fiber and I literally said “what!?!” out loud. Why? Why on fucking earth would anyone make a sub out of CF? It wasn’t even forged, it was *spun*. Amazing. Amazingly amazingly stupid as fuck. Also, titanium, because titanium “kicks ass” or something. Both materials are chosen primarily for their light weight (which is totally irrelevant in a submarine) and with CF it’s failure characteristic…which is totally unsuitable for subs as well. This was a lethally moronic company…

“Rush said in a 2021 interview, "I've broken some rules to make [Titan]. I think I've broken them with logic and good engineering behind me. The carbon fiber and titanium, there's a rule you don't do that. Well, I did.””

That should be on his tombstone.

The viewport was only rated for 1/3 the depth that Titanic rests at. That's an even bigger oversight than the carbon fiber.

Also, they literally made a video of them spinning the carbon fiber drum and they just did it in a normal ass warehouse. Any amount of dust, skin particles, moisture, or other contaminants getting into the fiber as they're spinning it could cause inclusions and other weak points. Even if the carbon fiber idea would've worked in theory, that would require a clean room environment while they're actually building it.

Buncha submarine experts in here wow

I don’t know if you heard the news but…it got crushed. The jury is in. It’s sucked. It was sucky engineering. You don’t need to be an expert of any kind. We have all the data.

CEO took this to heart
I mean, he had a degree in aerospace engineering from Princeton and designed multiple functional aircrafts, submarines, and submersibles. That's the crazy part. He just decided to try to cheap out on this one because he was sniffing his own farts.

No shit, smurf. I'm commenting on how you and Fami read a few articles and now you're acting like you're materials science consultants for 3M and DuPont.

Why are you doing this? What is the point? To spread a “nobody really knows anything” philosophy on life?

There was NOBODY building carbon fiber deep dive submarines except this idiot. He was warned by…apparently everyone. Skipped all certification. Sued his detractors and former employees for telling him what we now know is the truth. Ignored everyone’s advice and killed himself, his crew, and his company.

But you’ll take his side over anyone and everyone if they don’t build submarines for a living…I mean…unless they were in the thing when it collapsed, how could anyone know anything, right?

You may not understand how expertise works…

I really feel sorry for the 19 years old boy who had a bad feeling about the whole thing from day one and only went to oblige his father.

Hybris. It's the reason the Titanic went down and it also killed that plastic sub. So ironic, so tragic, will we ever learn?
