I remember I used to destroy my hands playing Track & Field in the arcades. Got, what a shit video game. Why did I play it?
That is why you use a pencil or flat stick, put it between your fingers and pivot back and forth with the two run buttons ;)

Hyper Sports on the other hand...you couldn't do that on some of the events like skeet shooting.

I remember using a sock over my hand for a similar effect on Olympic Gold on the mega drive.

Man, I've had some fun with socks over the years.

I'm amazed no one here brought up the dude who lost the pole vault event because he hit his dong on the bar.

Edit: I never particularly cared about the Olympics for a multitude of reasons and the event is an albatross for whatever poor city/country that has to host it but I am happy for the people who train in "who gives a shit?" sports to get to compete in front of an international audience once every four years. Like you got really good at hurdles? That's cool... here's your literal fifteen minutes to show off your stupid human trick that you trained a decade plus to learn. Now go become an office worker for the rest of your life.

Oh... plus all of the ridiculously hot ladies wearing skimpy outfits.

We cheated a little in the arcade with Hyper Olympics/Hyper Sports (don't remember which one of the two). The distance between the two run buttons was such that a BIC disposable lighter fit just on top of them when placed on the flat side, this made it possible to waggle it quickly left and right which triggered the buttons faster than you could ever do it by hand. Back then I kept on wondering about the best-of times for the dashing events but after I had seen someone use the BIC cheat, I could reach them as well.

Needless to say the ops weren't amused.

The Algerian chick is just ugly and mannish and the "controversy" is just right-wing fearmongering. She fell well within the IOC's standards for a woman competing in sports and if we're going to get all up in our feelings about people having genetic abnormalities that give them a competitive advantage, then you'll have to start immediately looking at people like Michael Phelps and his weird frog feet.

Hyper Olympics (what Track & Field was called outside of the US) any flat tool worked on the buttons to get that back and forth motion. When the game first came out, people used to pound the holy shit out of the buttons and control panel so they invented a 'button guard' for them: the outer part of the button was raised so only the fingertips could be used so people would stop banging them. We then put thumbtacks on the end of a flat stick or pencil to bypass the raised guards. Later on they came up with trackballs as replacements but to me it wasn't the same. Hyper Sports (Hyper Olympics 84) you could do the same except for the skeet shooting or archery event and track balls wouldn't work on the game because of the two beforementioned events. '88 Games (Konami 88) was the third in the series and was a combo of the previous two with nicer graphics.

The entire controversy stems from the International Boxing Association, which is well known as one of the most corrupt organizations in all of sports.

Basically, the women at the center of this controversy were never a problem at IBA events until they started beating Russian fighters. Once that happened they suddenly failed "gender tests" but the IBA refused to say on what basis they failed and since then the IOC cut ties with the IBA entirely due to unrelated corruption and ethics issues.

The Algerian woman literally fought and lost at the Tokyo Olympics and nobody cared. And if she were trans, Algeria would've put her in jail rather than sending her to the Olympics. It's literally illegal to be trans there.

Haha, I remember they did something like that over here as well, some Hyper cabs had blocks between the run buttons to prevent ppl using tools, others had concave buttons which made using the trick less effective.

There are times when I become hypnotized by the weirdness of curling, I must admit.

Actually the last time I watched the Olympics was curling also, lol.

For those who don’t have cable/satellite or make use of over the air broadcast TV, how are you guys even watching this shit? I assume some streamers are showing it?

Peacock has it. They even have the multi-screen thing like NFL Sunday Ticket where you can watch 4 events at once. Currently on a 6-month free trial so it's been fun to watch some of the non-swimming/non-gymnastics events (since that's all broadcast TV ever fucking shows).

Yeah, no one is laughing about this more than Algerians online, pointing out the impossibility of a state-sponsored trans person.

What's the weirdest thing to me is all the people on both sides acting like this is something new. We've literally been accusing Russian women olympic athletes of being men since before I was born. This is like the fourth oldest story known to man.

I was under the impression that the Russian/East German thing was always that they took crazy amounts of steroids, not that they had hidden hot dogs.

Yup. There were lots of Olgas and Natashas who looked more like Ivans and Dmitris back then, thanks to the efforts of Russian and East German pharma. Watching Olympic women's weight lifting or shot put in the 80s was always fun, specially the award ceremonies where you saw two average-sized women and one Russian lady with a three-day stubble towering in the middle.

The USSR and GDR had elaborate doping programs and developed a variety of steroids combination which took the whole thing to a new level, that's why the discoveries of their "sports doctors" are still quite popular today among athletes with a flexible view on fairness.

The men's 1500m last night was a great race. Britain and Norway tuned into their TVs to watch Kerr (Brit, world champion) take on Ingerbrigtsten, (Norwegian, olympic champion) in a real grudge match. These guys don't like each other at all and there's been verbals between them for years now. The norwegian is definitely faster, but 1500m is quite a tactical race and the Brit is smarter.

Ingerbrigsten tried to run Kerr into the ground, set off at a lightning pace. It didn't work, the brit kept with him until the last corner and made his move. At that point the norwegian tried to push the brit out wide to make him run further, and an american cheered on at home by a crowd of his parents and their dog crept down the inside line and took the gold from them both.

All I could think was isn't that just the Olympics in a nutshell.

Peacock sucks. I don't know if everyone gets commercials on it, but I do and it sucks. If you fast forward an event you get a commercials, sometimes 2 minutes long.

The on screen menu sucks. Finding events is a drag. Fuck Peacock.

All of the streaming networks are pretty shit when it comes to discovery but yes, the Olympics has commercials regardless of whether or not you have an ad-free plan. Not super surprising... NBC pays a gazillion dollars for the rights and want to squeeze every fucking penny out of the three weeks or whatever it is the Olympics run. Even as someone who loathes ads of any kind, it strangely doesn't bother me much. Then again, I only watch during the work day as something to have on in the background and have it muted half the time.

So yeah... fuck Peacock, I guess. They're all kind of shit at this point.

Watch BBC with a VPN - no ads, but you'll have to put up with a lot of bronze and silver medal interviews.

My extended family is all together for a reunion/vacation this week, and that race last night brought us all to our feet. Our stomping and cheering woke up the babies that were sleeping, lol.

At the 1/4 way point, I popped off with ‘what if the man-bun in last place has a hellafied kick and ends up bronze or something?’

After the UFC-esque pre race packages on the two main rivals, to have the ultimate underdog skunk them both was amazing.
