Can we talk about why or why not Mai the Psychic Girl was never animated?

Currently on S1E13 of Fist of the North Star. I watched the film first and wasn't terribly impressed, however the artwork has always struck a chord with me. I remember going through the instruction manual of Double Dragon for the NES and how blown away I was by its character art, which clearly was inspired from the manga/anime.

Kenshiro must truly live in the land of giants, because he looks like he's about 6 ft. tall, yet most everyone dwarfs him. I get a kick out of the inconsistent scale; a villain who's roughly a foot taller than him can suddenly become twice his size or more depending on the change in angle. Seems like there's been a big chunk of filler so far but not a bad series to take in a couple episodes here and there after the kids are in bed.

Can't speak for her absence in anime, but...*ahem* "Dual-suspension ninja-girl Mai Shiranui"* was in Fatal Fury - The Motion Picture.

*This line was spoken in the film's trailer by Geese Howard's English VA in both OVAs and the film. I would give nearly anything to view archival footage of him saying this line without bursting into laughter seconds after.

Good eye on the Double Dragon connection, Technos was 100% inspired by it. But yeah man, it's so good. I remember watching this with my dad in middle school on Showtime Beyond, I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. But it got stuck in the back of my head, and with the Atomiswave game coming out and the New FOTNS OVAs all around that time frame, yeah, I became a huge fan.

I don't think I will ever go through the series again but every few months I'll put on an episode or watch a scene. The story seems so simple and goofy but the lore and characters are so memorable. I never watched Part II though. For me the story was told after the last fight with Ken and Raoh.

Here's another FOTNS reference:

Here's a great thread to look at when you finish the series if you don't want to be spoiled: https://www.neo-geo.com/forums/index.php?threads/fist-of-the-north-star-appreciation-thread.77116/

Okay about to go megagoob. Amassed a lil collection. As some people here know I went back for a second round of the ol' college try in my 30's. I managed to amass a stupid big collection of animu during that time because like the idiot I am I didn't actually have time to sit down and watch it.

Just tell me what to watch. There are a handful of out of print titles I know I want but they aren't present. I'm overwhelmed. It's all shit I know I like. zomg halp!!1

Casshern Sins is great.

Also, if you liked Trigun, you shoud check out Blood Blockade Battlefront (Keikkai Sensen) on Netflix. It's adapted from the more recent comic of the writer/artist of Trigun.

Lot of good stuff in there.

Cyberpunk series is fucking awesome, way better than it has any right to be. I'd start there it will get you hyped to watch all the more traditional anime that inspired it.

That Patlabor set is nice, it's all awesome except for the last movie.

Can't go wrong with OG Bubblegum Crisis.

Has to be said, though, you have an alarming percentage of your collection still in the shrink wrap. Collector's disease: identified

Trigun is an old fave. Haven't actually watched any any since my best friend growing up's older brother was making us watch it 20+ years ago. This was around the time he made us watch him play Chrono Trigger on the basis of "bro, trust me, bro" and wasn't wrong. :buttrock:

I was actually blown away by the CP2077 anime. I had very low expectations from the Netflix tie in anime, ended up liking it enough to buy the bootleg from China via eBay. $15 shipped well spent.

Sounding like Trigun then Patlabor and later I'll sc00p some BBB (kekz). Thanks guys.

Yeah, no, already said in my initial post. I'm trying to cut down on the stuff I (g00b help me) bought and never got around to watching. The last year and a half of going back to school for computer science really kicked my ass. It was like "oh hey I can have time to watch this on the weekends", nope, I most certainly did not. :keke:

I have more time now but honestly didn't know where to start even though I was only buying stuff I knew/was reasonably certain I'd like.

EDIT: It has been about a year since I've bothered to buy any animu stuff because it ends up sitting on the shelf unopened. lol

You won't regret seeing Record of Lodoss War. Phenomenal artwork, character design, musical score...love that series. Not much in terms of animation, but the sheer attention to detail in what's there is unprecedented several decades after release. The English dub is exceptional, especially for its time.

Continuing my Devilman interest that started last month, I've been reading Devilman Saga: https://ww1.mangafreak.me/Read1_Devilman_Saga_1

This is like another retelling of Devilman, it's the first manga I've read in years and I'm enjoying reading a few chapters before hitting the hay. It was serialized from 2014 to 2020 but looks like it's still being translated into English.

The original comic is still the best. Not the comic that adapted the cartoon which came out around the same time, though. That's garbage.

I’ve been watching Kinnikuman Perfect Origin Arc

I had M.U.S.C.L.E wrestlers as a kid including the ring. I also had the NES game.

I did watch some of the circa 2003 Ultimate Muscle Saturday Morning Cartoon, but this is more serious and has a lot of blood and violence and characters offing themselves that lose.

Yeah new episodes every Monday.

I’m done for playing that for sure. I have to dig my copy out I think I have it on GameCube as well.

Finally got around to watching Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly 30 years later.

Watched all the episodes last week. Still have the movies to watch. I'm torn on how I feel about the series. So many seizure inducing episodes. The last 2 episode were hard to watch as well, with all the constant flipping between dialogue for the entire episodes.

I feel like after I finish the movies, it may be one of those series that I need to rewatch to decide if I like it. Definitely had some really cool fight scenes though. My favorite episode is the one where Shinji and Misato have to work together for the first time and fight the Angel with the classical music playing.

Anyone know after watching the 2 movies in the Blu-ray set if there is more I need to watch? I feel like there are more movies than what is in the Blu-ray set.

Goddamn Gohan you've been busy. Anyway, watch Stardust Memory next.

I've been watching in production order, and I'm watching Victory now and I just realized my list skipped Stardust Memory, dammit. I'll have to watch it after I finish up Victory.

I almost skipped Victory since it wasn't on any streaming service, but found it on the Archive. Can't say I'm a fan of skipping so far into the future that very little of what's happened in the other shows is relevant, but the cast is extremely likeable and I'm glad I'm watching it.

There's a lot of good stuff here, but I would absolutely start with Cowboy Bebop.

Watched it when I picked it up about a year ago. Not like I hadn't seen it a million times before that...

Wrapping up AD Police and doing teh Crisis of Bubblegum.

Bubblegum Crisis is great, it's one of the few I've watched multiple times since it's pretty short. One thing though, I'm not really a sub guy and will almost always watch the English dub if it's available, but Bubblegum Crisis' dub is so brutal I only do subtitles for that one.

There's a trilogy of newer movies called "Rebuild" that are basically a condensed reworking of the series.

Prefer these to the original tbh.
All killer, no filler.

The gist of the TV show…without being as doggone long as a multi-season episodic TV show.
