It's expensive but cheaper than a pc. It's not outrageous for a high end console you're gonna use for a few years

When I say 'shenanigans', I'm just talking about corpos being corpos. Don't read too much intot it.

And even if they're easy to understand, it doesn't make them any less annoying to us oldheads. Which is odd, considering we should expect this sort of thing from corpos by now. We never learn.
Yeah, expected, so people acting shocked or angry about it online has no purpose other than drumming up more interaction. Regardless, people with the money who like PlayStation and have a nice TV will buy it. The pre-orders will obviously sell out.

They are literally trying to 'cancel' this console, just like they do with everything. Dare to disagree with the one opinion that appears to float to the top of the fray and get shouted down.

You'd think of all places, the Neo Geo forums would be open to the idea of a premium console offering, but everyone here is so old and curmudgeonly at this point.
I mean, I may be more grumpy than I was in some aspects but I've definitely mellowed out in others. However, I don't spend any more money on gaming stuff as an early adopter. I can still get quite enthusiastic over certain new releases or hardware but the days when I had to have something NOW are long gone. The old selling tricks don't really work on me anymore, it needs some more effort these days to make me open my wallet, there are just too many snake oil peddlers out there.

Gimme something substantial and we can talk but if it's just a bit of new hardware with lotsa promises but no new games I'm gonna pass.

The idea of wasting the whole night figuring it out hits too close to home. In my middle age, I've bought things I wanted that I still haven't taken out of the packaging (Saturn Saroo) because I'd rather just see what's on Netflix than waste my time on it.

Probably what passes as a middle age crisis for gamers. Most of us knew we would never get a Ferrari. We just wanted weird gaming shit. I'm in the same boat on a lot of stuff.

On a cost per hour basis the ps5 could be £5k and still work out as my cheapest leisure activity after wanking.

I think people are now more than ever are being forced to see a value proposition before forking over money, especially now that covid cash is gone and the rates on their credit cards have variably increased to their maxes.
Perhaps this console was never aimed at these types (PS4 pro ownership was something around 14% of their overall ownership)
Other than some paid off CNET puff piece - what exactly did they show here that would compel anyone to fork over the money on this thing?
It's been near 4 years of the cycle and I can appreciate the form factor change, chips, efficiencies etc - but this has been a cringe ass reveal any way you slice it.

Lastly, just take a look at the failures of their GAAS investments across studios etc - yeah they only need lightning to strike once to make it all back, but fuck paying for their failures with this nickel and dime fleece job.

"advanced ray tracing"- does that mean it's path tracing (I mean, real ray tracing)?
IMO, optical media isn't obsolete. UHD Blu-rays, & normal blu-rays are the only way to watch uncompressed movies.

News flash, disc media is also compressed. Also, look up Kaleidescape.

Fake news.

The sell in the Mark Cerny reveal was that you can basically play the Performance mode without compromise (60 fps with all the resolution and details of the 30fps mode). I can imagine if you're a high end user with a nice TV and you want the most powerful console on the market, then you buy this. That's basically what I did with the Xbox One X. I'm still considering maybe buying this.

The amount of belly aching for this console generation (not just on n-g.com) makes me think gamers just hate gaming now.
I'm fine with it.

Then again I am 40+ years old with vastly different priorities than I had even a decade ago so the amount of time I have to game is so minimal.

I think the only console exclusives I've really played this generation have been Nintendo games and that is mostly just the mainline Zelda games.

I guess Starfield counts, but that game was poopy-ass-farts so I don't really count it.

Maybe if I were younger and/or played more games I'd probably scrutinize exclusives more, but I've long-since been part of the mindset of just get me whatever current system is cheapest and I'll be good.

IMO part of the shenanigans is getting a consumer used to one thing (mid-cycle hardware updates that cost the same as the base console, while also dropping the price of the base console) and then changing it up to a scheme that tips the balance even more in favor of the company than that of the user (mid-cycle hardware updates that cost substantially more than the base console, without dropping the price of the base console). When you combine that with the pretty minimal performance upgrade, people are going to be justifiably salty.

It would help if there was a good reason to upgrade. I mean they were showing better ray tracing on that Harry Potter game in the tech showcase... Yeah like that's going to draw in the hardcore gamers.

So the ask is lower the cost of the base console? You know they would have done this if they could. The nature of console hardware has changed in the past generation or so, plus there's inflation.

They did with PS4 to PS4 Pro. PS4 and PS5 are basically the same console with updated specs.

PS4 did not come down in price over its generation compared to previous ones. It's the first generation we saw console prices stay close to their original MSRP for most of the generation.

That's not what I'm saying. Read my post again. I'm talking about mid-cycle hardware upgrades. Not price changes across generations.

PS4 = $400
PS4 Slim = $300
PS4 Pro = $400

That's a $100 price drop for the same hardware and a $0 price increase for upgraded hardware.

PS5 = $500
PS5 Slim = $500
PS5 Pro = $700

That's a $0 price drop for the same hardware and a $200 price increase for upgraded hardware.
