TREASURE BOX - Shirt of the Month #5: October
Formed in 1992 from a team of ex-Konami employees, Treasure has since built a cult following with
their library of challenging and entertaining titles which were innovative within their respective genres. Treasure started to gain notoriety after pushing the technical limits of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive hardware like no developer had ever done before with its fantastic run 'n gun,
Gunstar Heroes. After a few more impressive releases for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Treasure turned its attention towards the Sega Saturn and broke beat 'em up boundaries with 1996's
Guardian Heroes. The Sega Saturn would also see Treasure's first shoot 'em up, the seminal
Radiant Silvergun, which was also released on Sega's ST-V arcade hardware. The Nintendo 64 in Japan saw a couple great releases from Treasure in titles
Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh and
Sin & Punishment, once again showcasing Treasure's talent of pushing hardware to its technical limits. The following year Treasure would release what is commonly referred to as the "spiritual sequel" to
Radiant Silvergun, the Sega Naomi-based
Ikaruga. The success of
Ikaruga led to console ports on the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Gamecube, and more recently for download on Xbox Live arcade, accompanying HD remakes of both
Guardian Heroes and
Radiant Silvergun.
While Treasure has slowed down a bit in recent years, they are still developing games for current gen consoles and handhelds leaving fans holding out hope for Project: RS-3.
